Just before xmas I made 2 life choices (not resolutions) for the coming year.
They were both in the area of getting more physically fit. Both for my benefit and my daughters. She used to do karate up until recently, so I want her to keep her fitness up before she hits the teenage slump!!
Anyways... the first was to book DD in for horse riding lessons. This will be done at the end of next month. Hopefully the weather will improve a tad then?
The next was to go for it and finally join a gym. Now the thought of this terrifies me. But I have got an 'individual appointment' tomorrow evening.
It is at the Ricoh Arena gym. It looks really good, but the deciding factor on that gym was the fact it has a unique kids gym, fitted by Shokk (supposed to be good?)
She can exercise/do classes with her instructor, whilst I do whatever I want.
Anyone go to this gym? The website doesn't really show much of the interior. I am guessing all these new fangled places have tvs and stuff now?
I am worried I will join and get bored. How does one maintain interest whilst running like a hamster? Any tips? Or is the ipod all there is?
Still feeling a bit 'inferior' about the whole thing. I am guessing there will be a supermodel running next to me
And another thing... are these machines hard to operate? I can envisage myself being flung off one of those conveyer belt things

Your best bet is to have a look round with out signing anything... See what sort of people there are.
I've been to gyms where they weights area's are full of pumped up muscle mary's looking at themselves in the mirror grunting to sound like they're working hard. I find that intimidating as Im a skinny scrote but want to build up.
Some other gyms aren't so bad. I guess it depends on what you want to do. Cardio and fitness classes are generally dominated by women of all ages/sizes.
If you ask nicely... Most gyms will dish out a free day pass for you to have a try. ____________________ Like a Yorkie - I'm not for the girls |

Well, went along for my appointment this evening after work.. kid in tow
It was blummin marvellous!!
I always imagined gyms as sweaty, stinky, dingy, boring places. This one was really cool. Lots of new fancy machines, loads of glass windows so it felt really open and fresh, and one wall of glass overlooked the huge football pitch, (which you can run around whenever you like!)
And, get this, I though they would have tv's dotted here and there... the machines had INDIVIDUAL mini plasma screens on them!! How mega is that!!!!!??????
I am so excited. Can you tell?
And, on a womanly note, the bathrooms/showers were great, and the saunas/power showers looked really good.
So, I have joined my daughter and myself up. £50 a month. It sounds expensive, but you get any classes you want included for free, and personal 'life plans' every 8 weeks. A personal trainer also helps you for the first few lessons. They map your fitness levels and progress on a card, etc...
(Whilst I was there I was fortunate to actually see a personal trainer working with a new woman on the running machine)
My induction is on Thursday. I get a 1:1. And based on what I want to achieve, we work on the machines from there...
Daughter goes on same day. The kids Shokk gym is a marvel. Proper high tech equip, but scaled down a touch. Those water resistance rower things, bikes, weights... all with an instructor. Everyday, whenever you want to turn up. They also have kids dance/circuit classes etc...
I don't know why I was so scared to go and have a look.
They were friendly, down to earth, and the place had a good feel to it
I can't wait to get started now. I feel... liberated!!
JO xx

Woohoo go you. The kids gym sounds great wish there was one near here. Dont forget to liberally use all the nice products in the showers/ changing rooms, might as well get your moneys worth . The place I joined does social stuff too which is sometimes good fun. ____________________ "Eat food, not edible, food-like items. Mostly plants." |

I also assumed this was a thread about filling your pants with shit after a emitting a tremendous fart, now i feel let down and a little cheated.
Gyms are for gaylords, try a rigorous routine of hindu squats and press-ups coupled with a bit of running. Eating raw meat and wrestling alligators or bears can also toughen you up a bit.

Don't be a ponce and get your own - you can keep one for less than 50 quid a month - plus a half-starved bear is more aggressive and up for a 'rassle. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Just an update>>
I love LOVE the gym! Still going strong
Going again tomorrow (4th time this week)
Daughter still loves it too. She likes the leg press and bikes
I really enjoy the treadmills (elevation speed walking and running)
The X Trainer isn't so bad (up to 12 minutes), but the Stepper machine is a KILLER!
I hate it
BUT my leg muscles are so v much coming along
Amazing
I wonder when I will tire of going?
I must admit, I was feeling a bit cra**y this afternoon before going (due to a late night) and thought I had NO energy, but once I got going I was like a nimble thing!
And on another note, we had a total nob in there on Thursday. He spent about 10 minutes grunting and lifting stuff whilst his skinny mate looked on (obv showing off to him). Then he spent about an hour walking around the gym, stopping to look down at himself (thinking that no-one could see him doing this! ) and also sipping a bit of water.
I wish gyms didn't have such big heads in them ____________________ Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow" |
