Was just sitting in town along the foreshore watching the traffic go by while having a quick smoke and a coke.

While I was watching things go by I noticed something.

There had obviously been an accident on the road and there was a lot of debris and glass scattered across most of one lane.

Ok not real interesting at this point but I also noticed something else.

Of around 23 cars that I saw go over the rubbish on the road, none of them seemed to spot it early enough to try and avoid it.
Although the majority of them hit the brakes after hearing the noise of it go under their wheels.

This is where it gets interesting 4 bike also went over the same spot and every single one of them spotted the shit on the road and made moves to avoid it.
Not one actually ran over any of the debris.
One was also a learner.

Just to clear things up this is a pretty quiet stretch of road so even though the cars are obviously bigger and it adds risk to crossing the lines into the oncoming lane. There was more often than not, no cars coming the other way. Making avoidance a simple task.

Ive always told friends who didnt ride that you become hyper aware of your surroundings when riding a bike and even pick up a 6th sense ( no not dead people) .
To which they usually reply bullshit.

Well for me this proved it. A nice little experiment and I didnt even have to set it up. Just kick back and watch.

Also proves we are the dominant road users and are far superior to any other prats we share it with

Fully agree with you, as a biker you just naturally pay more attention to whats going on. I also find that is the same with my driving now Thumbs Up

Yep and I'm sure if you stayed for long enough a car would have gone past and avoided it, but he was probably a biker in a car Wink

It's one of those things that when your more at risk you pay more attention, like if you lived in iraq at the moment, you'd probably pay more attention to whos walking about and what risks there are, compared to living in the uk, where there isnt a lot thats gonna kill you.

When I drive a car I like to run over things... Maybe they done the same but when they heard the noise they got scared and confused and thus thinking that tapping the brakes will save them from danger.

Or there just fucking idiots. I am so appauled at the way people drive now im driving a van instead of a bike ( bike died )

The way people pull out and such is scarey, CArs not stopping to look properly at junctions, so much so that they nearly or DO pull out on a 20ftlong, 9fthigh van!

I see people driving cars that are far to big and fast for them, like these new American truck things there bringing over, People my age are driving rs turbos and other pretty fast cars and im 18 years old, And they just dont have a clue.

And I can promise you that atleast 80% of car drivers think that "if you cant see any cars around that blind bend because the trees or buildings are in the way then it must mean the roads clear "

Maybe it's because small things like debris or stones can cause bikers to crash while it doesn't really have the same effect for cages?

Though when I drove my car before my biking days I still noticed debris as I was paranoid about getting a puncture!

I'm sure my driving and observation has improved by a vast amount since I started riding.
I've had enough punctures and problems related to debris sticking in my tyres that I avoid crap on the road whenever possible.

Just from the amount of stuff left on the road I dont know how they missed it.

With Glass and plastic stuff there, I sure as shit would have went around it and not over it.

It almost like they didn't notice it till they heard it.

Hope next time it ain't me they only notice when they hear me under their wheels

very well said Thumbs Up top marks for you sir!

we bikers are more observant of obstacles as we are more venerable than other road users. we pick up on the slightest debris because we know that, that could potentially cause us serious injury where as car drivers are not aware that debris as small as a crushed can, can cause a substantial amount of injury, so is overlooked without a second thought.

I'm more careful about running stuff over on my bike as I've had about 10 punctures in my biking life, but not a single one in a car Confused and the cars got a bloody spare wheel aswell.

I think for most people thats spot on. I havent ridden properly but even just being on the back of a bike everyday had made me so much more aware. Im sure that would highten if I rode myself.
