What the hell is the point? What's with the ass in the air? They look worse in my opinion. Tell me a few reasons to do it to a bike. I see it as torture to my eyes

from what i can tell, they are tarty forms of stunt bikes. and the turned up tail are there for making wheelies more comfortable Smile

buts its gone far bejond ripping off the fairing and sticking straight bars on a sports bike, its become a fashion, hobby or a passion.

much like 'choppers' and how they origionated from getting old ww2 bikes and removing all the unwanted bits - 'chopping'

Proper streetfightering - fair enough, can look pretty cool.

Half-arsed attempts at 'fightering' some trashed sports bike cause you can't be arsed replacing expensive fairing - utter toss.

thats what a street fighter is!!!
its saposed to be a half arsed attempt, because you can't afford the over priced fairings, but still want to ride the bike,
me i would much rather have a naked streetfighter than, a pritty plasic bike. (i have in the past as soon as ive bought a bike removed all the fairings ect, just because i like the look, and if i crap off, i still have good condition fairings i can sell with the bike)
each to there own, Mr. Green Thumbs Up
if you like the plastic pocket rocket look.... then sweet, Thumbs Up

No, it's not supposed to be a half-arsed attempt.

I saw some fighters at RBCS last year that made me want to weep, they were so pretty. Immense effort goes into proper streetfightering.

What I object to is the shite that gets dumped on FleaBay, where someone has thought 'ah, can't afford the fairing, i know, i'll fighter it'.

Then after some renthals, cheap headlight and (on the butchered CBR400's i've seen) an R1 tailpiece slapped on, they get bored and sell it as '95% completed project'. Meaning they've realised what a complete fcuking horror they've made.

I like sports bikes, i've also seen a lot of streetfighters i've liked.

Proper ones. That's the distinction - going halfway is just shoddy and disappointing. Thumbs Down Don't do it kids! Very Happy

In some ways it's about challenging the preconceptions that are drilled into us by corporations as we grow up. I.e. Nothing is real unless it came from a shop, covered in clingfilm, with a bar-code on the back and a brand name emblazoned on it somewhere. Smile

For some people the point seems to be to make a bike that 'looks' as mean as possible with an expensive paint job and expensive after-market items bolted all-over - like a 'custom' cruiser, but a bit sportier.

For me, it's to make a sports bike into a bike suited for going fast in an urban environment.
A lightly jacked up rear end will speed up turn in. As will wide bars - which makes sense for tight urban corners. No fairing isn't a problem if you aren't going really silly speeds and means less to be damaged when you fall off.

Sadly for me the majority of streetfighters do seem to be owned by those that have bought bits with those brand names all over them, covered in cling film rather than those that have hacked a bit on to make it a better ride cheaply.

That's bollocks.. the people who put shit turned up tails on are for look not for any practical reason.

I don't consider my bike streetfightered at alll.. I just put some renthal bars on to make wheelies more comfortable for me. streetfighters are just show bikes usually with as much tarty/polished crap on as the owner can fit on it.. most prob dont even ride them let alone do wheelies!

Too true. I remember a while back there was a theory that maybe this started when they started making factory streetfighters. Who knows.

To be fair, I think for a long time people have been buying shiny bits with 'names' on them more for the sake of that than their actual use.

Well I think you're all a bunch of snobs.

Nothing wrong with a bike that has been bodged into a fighter after a crash. Maybe the bike was a financial write-off, maybe they were skint, maybe they care more about how it runs than how it looks.

The fact is that OE motorcycle parts are rediculously overpriced, especially plastics. Given the choice of spending £500+ on replacement parts or £60 on a couple of clamps, some renthalls and a headlamp unit. I have to say I'd be hard pushed to justify the former when the latter works just as effectively. Especially if the bike works perfectly well but is classified as 'beyond economic repair'.

Hell, get down a salvage sale and buy a top of the range, low mileage bike with light front-end crash damage, fork out £60 to £100 on a lash up 'fighter setup and go have some fun. Laugh like hell at the people who sneer at the bikes cosmetics as you go honking past them knowing how little it cost you to have just as much fun as they are.

I'll wheel out the picture of my mate Andys professionally built Harris streetfighter again, just to demonstrate what you can do if you want to spend the money and time to make something special and unique.

I disagree. The way I understood it, streetfighters originally are sportsbikes that have been crashed, at which point the owners slaps a cheap light and renthal bars on it to get it roadworthy again with as little cost as possible. It also means that it will crash better in the future and you no longer care about the way the bike looks, so its ready to be abused.
The shiny, expensive 'well-done' streetfighters came after, when people realised this can look pretty cool and it became a style in itself.

It's all part of the look, owner doesn't have any plans for long distance riding! Laughing

The old school streetfighters were things like rd`s cb`s and basicly making them better with what was lieing around like trailie bars and such on. But now a days street fighters tend to be the same old Gixxer 1100/750 7/11 or bandit and its the same crap monthly now(ok occasionaly something nice pops up) Basicly i believe original concept was cheap.

Tut Tut

A proper streetfighter is a work of art and engineering. Rat bikes are the bikes that you don't give a shit about how they look so long as they ride.

bollocks to that, art and engineering..... what a bunch of piffle and snobbery.Mr. Green
a street fighter is just a bike with out fairings that originally had them. a rat bike is a bike generly made of bits and peices lying around the back garden to get your old crashed crapper running, i think you've been thinking about this just too much, Mr. Green
if i buy a bike the first thing i do is remove the fairings, put on a light.
for me fairings are pointless for the riding i do, and the speeds that im legally allowed to go.

street fighters don't have to look nice to be a functional peice of kit.
Thumbs Up

Streetfighering a bike means to mess around with it and making a complete pig's ear of it.

Then realising that you want a proper bike and having to sell your little 'project' at a massive loss.

But it beats staying at home wondering what to do with your weekend!

I hope I have been clear.

As I've said before, my cousin made this GSXR 750 Turbo himself. Did the frame and everything.

Streetfighters done properly look awesome. And it's all a matter of opinion anyway.

You'll find the people saying they don't like streetfighters are generally the ones all on identical GSXRs/R-somethings/CBRs Laughing

That's just a bike without fairings. A streetfighter needs some form of customisation on it.
