So.... ebay is my downfall.
I have done the deed and got myself a 1990 VFR 400 NC30 import. After being inspired by the likes of craig, cillit and that other one i thought id have a bit of 400 love too. Having gone straight from DAS to GSXR 600 i missed the small bike stage which so many people rate so highly.
The bike:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/vfr3.jpg?t=1168951158

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/vfr1.jpg?t=1168951439

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/vfr2.jpg?t=1168951459

Theres a few bits missing and it looks a bit of a shed but at £550 for a 13,000 mile bike with uk history i decided it was worth the chance.

Bad points noted:
no front discs
mismatched fairing
no V5
no brake lever
front tyre punctured and balding

Good points noted:
low milage
history
pain in the ass sized rear tyre is almost new
perfect low budget project

Plans for future:
powder coat wheels black
fairings sprayed black
add 2006 HM plant decals - simple and cheap scheme
powder coat yokes
powder coat fork lowers
degrease the whole thing

What do you think? Im open to ideas so feel free to comment.

Errr.. fit some front brakes?

Other than that, i'm loving the 400 stage... can rag the nuts off it and it won't flip, has great speed and will beat pretty much anything. Nice and light too. Great bikes Mr. Green

i think craig strips his bikes, not to fix them, but to clean them, so his approach might be a bit much for the average rider

well today was spent fault finding.

more bits needed:

mirrors
levers
front discs
front pads
rear caliper
rectifier
flasher relay
ignition box
front tyre
poss rear shock as its pretty stiff
shed loads of fairing bolts
oil!
coolant
1 x HT lead

If im honest for the work that needs doing it was not very cheap. The ebay ad made it sound alot better than it actually is, saying that its 95% complete with only mirrors, discs and indicators missing. when in actual fact in a non runner with all the above and probably more missing. It appears that someone has had a go at a rebuild and got bored as theres lots of new parts but badly fitted! oh well, its starting to come up alot better now and with some time and patience it will be fine.

oh and its got UK clocks on it which is a bonus. Does this take the restrictor off?

Over the weekend i spent some time on the bike. I got the clocks cleaned up, the yokes resprayed (couldnt wait to be powdercoated),
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/Picture051.jpg?t=1169677036

the fork legs repainted,

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/Picture015.jpg?t=1169677131

the levers and switch gear all cleaned / sprayed, the swingarm and rear end de-greased and refitted, the calipers stripped and cleaned (except the rear one that decided the locking pin didnt want its head anymore and snapped off!), the carbs were siezed up and full of junk so i sourced a new set and fitted them,

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/keir_compact/Picture016.jpg?t=1169677187

the pegs and peg hangers were cleaned and sprayed and the rear master cylinder was replaced as the old one was sticky and crap.

Thats the update for now really.
