Ooh look, one of my first posts is in here asking for help!

My girlfriend and I are to be engaged, and we've been talking about rings and the like. She wisely mentioned that there could be a problem concerning wearing her engagement ring under her bike gloves because of the stone in it etc, she wouldn't want it to get damaged.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

Don't think she would like to take it off, or not wear gloves. Good suggestions all the same. Masking it up maybe, but i'm not sure about that either.

Buy two rings.. one being the nice shiney expensive one, and one being a nice, but cheaper more slim version to wear when riding bike and such, thus its still in a way an engagement ring but a bit more practical? Laughing just an idea anyway

Yeah, i'd though of that, to be honest shes not keen on the idea of traking it off, i might see if i can get a ring that'll have the gem set lower, so it won't be so obstructive.

She may not be keen on taking the ring off, but does she intend to wear it at night and when she is doing manual things that could damage it, like washing up, bleaching and cleaning etc?

Most of my string playing friends wear their wedding rings on a chain around their necks as rings, particularly diamond encrusted jobbies aren't practical when playing a stringed instrument as it can damage the neck and prevent you stretching properly.

I think that's a good enough compromise. She can have a nice chain to hook the ring onto when she's on the bike/washing up and wear it properly for other occasions. Thumbs Up

Bloody Typical Shocked

First you lot want a nice diamond encrusted ring and then you come up with a mickey mouse excuse so yo can get a soddin' chain too - It's no wonder Elizabeth Duke recorded record profits last year (eh Jon? Wink)

You can get rings that have an enclosed stone. Some are set in a V, which makes them eaier to wear under gloves.

If I had one, I would not want to take it off to ride!

My engagement ring is ruby/diamond, 19 lil stones.
I wear it always. Under gloves, when I'm cleaning, whatever...

It is as good today as it was 4 years ago. (Reminder to self, engagement anniversary next month) Wink

I agree, get nicely set low stones that won't fall out/damage as easily as the big showey off rings.

When she finally gets the ring I can see her not being too keen to remove it. Taken her long enough to get I bet!! Laughing

How big a ring are you getting?????

Rolling Eyes it'll fit mun!

EDITY THINGY: Theres room in the gloves for her to bend her fingers so there should be tonnes of room for a ring... Take the gloves with you when you go shopping! Wink

Mine is similar to that - six little stones in a kind of 'v' shape and it never causes me any problems when wearing my bike gloves! Thumbs Up

You want to look for stones in what is called a "rub-over" setting.

My eternity ring looks like this and I have never had any problems with my bike gloves (or any other gloves for that matter).

Isn't diamond supposed to be a very hard material, surely harder than kangaroo/cow leather? So, why would leather or textile gloves damage the stone? Confused

In any case, obscenely huge stones are so tacky, so get a small discreet one instead.

They don't damage the stone per se Paivi, but in a claw-set ring bits of glove get caught up on the claws and can damage your gloves and also possibly loosen the claws (gold is quite soft) so that the stone falls out.

My ring is fine under gloves and I rarely take it off. the stone is in a floating setting, no claws or anything and it sits below the level of the metal so doesn't catch. Talk to the jeweller they'll be happy to help you spend your money, and congrats by the way Smile
