The good lady wife picked up a leaflet today, at the doctors of all places, for Licence Guard, a service I hadn't heard of before. It's effectively an insurance policy, so that if you lose your licence through points totting up (excluding drink/drugs) they will cover your travel expenses - taxis, trains, buses etc. up to an amount dependant on your annual premium :-

£65 - £6,000
£75 - £9,000
£100 - £12,000
£125 - £15,600

Could be useful for anyone with up to 6 points who would be up shit creek completely if they lost their licence.

Except the risk to them is higher, so they limit it to 6.

It seems like a good idea, as long as you don't expect to be done for:
"dangerous or reckless driving, whether or not such conviction is the sole reason for disqualification." - extract from their policy document

I worked out that it would cost me roughly £11,000 per year to commute to work by cab.
So they amounts they pay out are quite sufficient. Smile

Imagine having to get a receipt for every single taxi journey of every single day for a whole year. And then having to send them all off - sounds like a major ballache!

I can't imagine the sort of people who will be banned from totting up points will be the sort of people who are prepared to collect hundreds of receipts, keep logs of your travel and all sorts. That'll be where the company win.

You just arrange a contract taxi instead , ie same time everyday same bloke if you want , I did this for 3 months while living in gang banger city as a child before our semi suburbia house was ready we had to stay with somebody else that area was so rough and still is rough, gang rapes on a daily basis , drive by all day every day, every public item benches phone booths broken glass , every house had armoured shutters and after dark it went dead for a few minutes and the streets were stalked by chavs.

Imagine away. I'm the sort of person who would lose their licence through totting up, and am also the kind of person that can manage the task of collecting receipts. It's not hard, and a ban would most likely not be for a year anyway.

I believe that a "totting up" ban is a year, but I can't find any details on the DVLA web site... Confused
