Hi all,

I have just received my renewal papers for my little scooter, which has got me pondering the murky workings of Insurance and the No Claims Bonus. I'd be obliged if any knowledgeable types could step in and assist.

The insurance for my scooter is up on Feb 7th, while my insurance on my KLE 500 carries on. If I do not renew my scooter insurance, will I then have 1 years no-claims that I can use, regardless of my KLE policy? I seem to remember someone saying that as long as you have any bike policy in force, you continue to collect NCB?

Further to that, my accident in 2005 led to me claiming on the legal cover of my Fazer policy, and the cancelling of the policy as the bike was written off. I assume that this would lead to me losing the 1 years NCB I had built up on the Fazer?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi

They are seperate no claims, so you cannot add one year from the scooter to 1 year from the Fazer (well, the odd company might allow it).

As your Fazer policy was cancelled you will have lost any no claims that you were aquiring that year. You will still have the no claims built up prior to that year. Most companies seem to allow up to 2 years from a policy expiring before you loose that no claims.

All the best

Keith

So either way I look at it, I have 1 years no claims?

Hi

Probably. Main way I can see them trying to get out of it is that the 1 year no claims from the fazer was from the year before your crash, and now over 2 years ago (ie, your proof is a renewal notice that is over 2 years old).

See what proof of no claims you can get from your old insurer.

All the best

Keith

Further to this, if I wish to use this NCB at a later date - such as buying a bike later in the year, I simply have to retain this renewal document, regardless of whether I renew?

ALWAYS keep that little letter that comes through the post at the end of a policy...AS when you next get insured they will ask for a proof of no claims. If you do not hand in the proof of no claims your insurance gets cancelled.

I was bit annoyed when mine (proof of NCD) got lost through post and the insurance company (bennetts) decided to cancel the policy. It took a week just to get a new no claims and ended almost losing my insurance! Neutral Crying or Very sad

I believe that i am correct in saying that you always need a proof of NCD, but i have consantly been insured on a policy so have NO idea whether a gap of a few months will affect this!!! Smile

Hope i could help!!!

You cannot normally combine NCD from policies that were running concurrently.

I had two years NCD from a policy for a RX-S100 I was riding, plus two years on my Fazer. When the RX-S was sold, I didn't replace it immediately, but when I bought a DR350S I looked at using that bonus for the new policy (it was within two years).

However, it worked out cheaper (equivalent of £20 instead of £130 to insure the DR) to get a multi-'bike policy for both the DR and the Fazer. Carole Nash cancelled the Fazer's policy and gave me a pro-rata refund, then issued a new policy for both 'bikes, with two years NCD.

The two years accrued on the RX-S have long since expired, and of course I didn't get any extra NCD for the year I cancelled the Fazer's policy, but overall I was better off.

HTH Smile
