Just curious following a conversation I was having with the missus earlier. Do you believe in ghosts and the like?

We moved into our current house about a year ago, and since we moved we keep having strange things happen around the house, my missus is convinced the place is haunted!

The house was built in 1831 and has had a fair share of deaths in the house. The most recent was of the old owner who lived here from 1974 until he died in the house in 1994 (When we moved in our landlord had a thing up giving the history of the house).

Odd things normally happen when my missus is here on her own. We've heard voices and stuff but you can put that down to it being a terrace house, although it doesn't sound like our neighbors as they a young couple on one side and a young single mum on the other, this is a quite clear voice of an old chap that sounds like it is in our house, but I'm happy to let that one slide.

The two really odd things are when stuff moves!

The two times this has happened that we really can't explain are

1) about 2 months ago, I'd left my set of keys on top of the TV. I always do. This is a fairly big bunch of keys and quite heavy, I was upstairs and my missus was leaving the lounge. She went into the bathroom, i heard her go in and switch on the light so I know she is not winding me up, all of a sudden i hear a thump, I go downstairs to see what the cat has knocked over. The lounge door was shut, the cat was outside and no one was in the room, but my keys were now on the other side of the room and we could see the marks where they had hit the wall. Now this is a distance of about 10 feet, this was no breeze blowing them off or them sliding off the set, they were clear across the room and upstairs I heard them hit the wall!

2) This morning my missus was in bed and woke up to hear a strange noise. Again thinking it was the cat she looked around. The cat was asleep at the end of the bed, but on her dressing table on the other side of the room one of her bottle of hand cream was visibly rocking back wards and for wards. She went over, and moved the other bottles away and it kept doing it until she put her hand near it, when it suddenly stopped!

This just seems strange. I know my missus wouldn't make stuff like this up, and I was here when the first thing happened.

Other little things happen, but nothing that can't be rationalized. At times our cat will freak out and really not be himself, and it seems like he is watching something in the room, and not just the normal cat staring into the distance crap, he's eyes really look like they are watching something! He'll also go mad across the floor as if he is chasing something and then try like mad to get into one of our cuboards!

Now I'm not a believer in stuff like this but my missus is convinced.

Just curious as to who here believes in the supernatural!

I do believe and I don't know why.

Only house I was ever scared of going back to was a relatives I was left in the house to sort the pc out no one else in the house at all and I could hear foot steps up stairs and a knocking. I went up stairs thinking wtf went into the spare bedroom and the wardrobe swung open. I have never run down a staircase so fast Laughing It was an old Victorian house.

It happens alot they said and random stuff gets moved about and opened.

I love going to scary places Mr. Green

Personally I don't really believe in ghosts. I am more a man of science. I say 'really' because my mum tells me that her house back in Ireland used to be haunted. She has told me all the things that she had witnessed and experienced (it wasn't just her, but the whole family). She would not lie to me (my mum never lies), so I do not know what the hell was going on. This would have been back in the early 60's.

There must be a scientific explanation for it all.

I voted yes.

I have ne first hand experience but was part of a group that used to explore an old closed down hospital. One day a few of the guys tried do do a ouija (sic) board. They all freeked out when the first question was answered correctly.

One was so freaked out he went back and torched the building.

So I'm still a bit sceptical but that one incident made me think.

I used to think my flat was haunted but later found out that I'd
been sleep walking lots and re-arranging furniture in my sleep. I
still sleep walk now but usually find that I've eaten loads of stuff
out my fridge or had a piss in the cupboard. Neutral

I am firm believer.

The first house I lived in was fine until my dad died on the sofa after that things got very strange.............

TV would flick channels by itself in my parents bedroom
There was an icy cold spot in my room and felt as if someone was watching you when there was no there
My mum would make her bed in the morning, no one would be near the room, then when you went back in there would be a mark on the bed as if someone had sat down there.
At christmas none of the decorations would stay on the walls or ceiling they kept either falling down or being taken down by something
Posters would get removed from the walls with no one being near the bedrooms all day
The worst one of all was the night before we moved house you have never felt a house with such a sad feeling in it, it was horrible

The house we moved into was spooked aswell

You would walk down the stairs and sometimes see a person standing in front of the front bedroom window (just out the corner of your eye but it was def a person)
I had a habit of standing on the bottom step of the stairs while putting my coat on to go out and at least 5 times I was pushed forwards (after that I stopped standing there)
You would be sitting in the living room either with people or on your own and you could clearly hear footsteps from where you could sometimes see someone standing in the front bedroom
The kitchen lights flickered on and off quite a lot
There was also a general feeling of unease at certain bits of the house

Turns out the couple that lived in the house at first she died from a blood clot in her brain (back in the early 80's) just a young couple the husband didnt want the house after that so he sold it and has had A LOT of owners since!

The house I am in now is lovely no spooky going on, no strange feelings or anything its nice to get a bit of piece and quiet finally.

let me tell you something that even to this day makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.

my auntie(fiona - mums sister) died of cancer 12yrs ago and left her daughter behind who was only 4yrs old and her husband:
a few weeks after she died my other auntie(dads sister) had a 'visit' from fiona this happened for a few nights on and off. my dads sister told us(mum, dad me and my brothers) about it and that fiona would sit on the end of her bed crying but with out making a sound, my dads sister asked her whats wrong but wouldnt get a reply. this went on like i said for a few nights on and off, then one night we got a fone call earlie hours of the morning my mum answered it, it was my dads sister. she was quite distressed telling her about the 'visit' from fiona and that fiona had said to her something but she couldnt understand anything fiona said as it was muffled but could clearly make out ''ring'' so my mum thinking something might of happened to fiona's daughter(my cousin) rang the house... all was well. for weeks we wer all racking our brains trying to work out what fiona ment by ''ring'' then one day my uncle brought my cousin round and left to go to work(as we cared for her too). all was well and fine then my cousin just came out with 'my dads getting married and im going to carry the ring'' well that was it, thats what fiona was trying to tell us.

i never believed in such activity untill this happened and now i do belive in ghosts and strange activity!

about my house:
we often have things go missing that turn up in the most obvious places... places we've look time and time again!
few years ago i was starting to fix a punture on my push bike, turned the bike upside down then started to undo the wheel nuts when i needed my dad to hold a spanner on the other side of the spindle so i could use the spanner i had to loosen the nuts as they was rusted tight. the nut was really tight so i decided to place the spanner on the nut and take a swing with a hammer, hit the spanner with massive force and it pinged off. me and my dad looked for ages trying to find this spanner as we couldnt finish the job without it. then mum came out asked what we wer looking for so we told her what had happened, she looked for a while and then she said ''there it is''... it was entwined in the spokes of the wheel like it had been placed there, but i hit it with the hammer hard! me and my dad looked at eachother in disbelife as theres no way that spanner could of got between the spokes of the wheel! that has always bugged me as to how it got there, its impossible for it to get entwined in the spokes as i hit it hard with the hammer -- really have no explanation to that incident and yep it still bugs me Mad

i could type all day about the strange things iv encountered and witnessed...... but i wont Razz
(P.S sorry for the long post, didnt relise it was this long Embarassed )

I've lived in many houses, the last one was a Victorian hospital where people went to live out the rest of their lives if they were mentally unstable.
In the renovation of the place it was a creepy place, i found the book of names of the people that lived there, found stuff in the gardens, i thought it was going to be horrible living there.

My dad renovated the place and we started living in there.
12 years later and nothing has made me think there is anything there, i've never seen a ghost, never had anything weird happen.

Any one who has told me about things happening can prove nothing.

The building I work in is an old georgian house converted to an office.

If I need to go into the Basement, I will only use a specific route. One flight of stairs is always cold.

I've worked late before and it's really creepy. Doors slam and you get that icy chilll as if someone has opened the window, when they are all firmly shut!

I believe there are strange things that happen to people, that can't easily be explained, but also that not being able to explain something doesn't mean that it must have been a ghost.

Or, he's just pointing out how lots of ghost theories are very flawed, like your one. Half the stuff in this thread is easily explainable, I'm quite sure the other half can be explained as well.

Just because you can't rationalize something doesn't mean its some unexplainable paranormal crap, it just means you can rationalize it.

It's all a load of bollocks, there's no such thing as ghosts, just people making up storys cos they didnt understand something.

im not sure if i believe in them.

i had a few mates round for a few beers and a movie, we were in the games room (at the time was above the garages, not attatched to the house)

and when we were in there we heard footsteps coming up the stairs, loud crashing noises coming form inside the garages, knocking on the windows, it was on the 2nd floor, so fairly high. the statue outside moved about 6 feet, and it takes 2 people to move it. even my dad got spooked by that when i told him. the parents were out at the time, it was just me and my mates.
all of us heard it. all of us scared Laughing

so i dont know what to think.

it wasnt burglars, because the dogs go crazy even if anyone tiptoes down the drive.

I agree, it is funny that when something strange happens people automatically think that the explanation must be something totally crazy and wild. Like when people see an unidentified flying object (U.F.O.) they come out that it must be some aliens in their spaceship from a distant world, rather than an explanation that is more likely. It could be debris entering earths atmosphere, a weather balloon, birds...there are loads of reasons of what it could be, but no it has to be aliens from outer space. Laughing I mean come on, why go for the most outrageous explanation!

I am sure there is a scientific explanation for the "ghostly" goings on. Why automatically think that it must be spirits from the afterlife?

I will believe it when I see solid evidence that can stand up to the experiments of science which will determine if it is spirits/ghosts/aliens or not.

Weirdest thing that's ever happened to me was back when I was about 15. Me and some mates decided to go have a wee looky see around some abandoned house (cliche I know, but stick with me) in our village. We made our less than legal entrance, and because the windows were all boarded up, we found it to be extremely dark. So, instinctively, we reached for our phones to light the way.

Except that didn't work, because all eight of us found that our phones were off. Odd, seeing as we'd been using them to meet up fairly recently. Odder still that not one of them would turn back on again. Not even a little bit.

Not being easily put of, we heroically set off into the rest of the house to further our explorations. We made it up the stairs having found nothing of interest downstairs (in hindsight, this was probably because it was dark) and all aimed straight for, well, I don't actually know, but there was definite purpose in our exploration. We all entered what felt very much like a room, but smelt much more like a wheelie bin full of rotting fruit and tramp droppings. We all stood still for a second; an event which probably looked as though we were taking in the significance of the room, but actually had much more to do with us all concentrating on not being the first to throw up. Then suddenly (and, indeed, without warning) the door to the room (I think, although there's no real way of being sure) slammed shut very hard. We all agreed later than none of us had ever been so scared by anything in our lives before or since. We all, to a man, sprinted down the stairs, screaming like little schoolgirls and out of the front door.

At this point I should point out that one or two joints had been smoked before the noble voyage was undertaken, and so I don't really take us being spooked as being all that conclusive as evidence of the paranormal goes, but we all swear blind it wasn't us (and the house burned down a few days later, and no tramp remains were found) so it's nothing if not a little strange.

Much more inexplicable was the fact that as soon as we made our somewhat undignified exit from the house (which culminated in a huge pile-up outside the back door as we were all blinded by the light) our phones turned themselves on.

I'm still unsure if I believe, I'm sure there are rational explanations for the above story (sorry for rambling, got a bit into that...) but I'm yet to see anything conclusive either way, so I'll keep an open mind...

we broke into an abandoned house before, only to find what looked like blood on the walls and bags full of ribs hanging up in the garage. there was also a very nice jag in there, but had long been without any innards, stollen years ago.

abandonded houses are fun Cool

Good point yes i agree. i didnt say everything was paranormal just some things are not explanable to my knowledge. All i said was i believed in it, thats just my oppion.

Not every knock, bump and sound is a big ghosty, could be anything always look into things before you jump first. All i was trying to say.
