I have come to discover that it is easy, those people who say it is hard don't actually want to quit at all, or, you're incredibly weak willed in which case I both pity you and wonder how you actually survive in this world long enough to buy a packet of cigarettes anyway.

Day 1, terrible, ate lots, tried to keep busy, may have been a bit snappy.

Day 2, not so bad, ate loads, began to get paranoid about my weight, again, snappy.

Day 3, easier, developed a case of bulimia, offended 2 people at work, had to apologise.

Day 4, easier than an essex bird on a saturday night, eating patterns went back to normal, complimented the 2 women I previously offended, had a pack of chewing gum.

Now after day 1 I didn't really have 'cravings' just my head kept saying "fag time" when I'd finished eating or got bored/finished doing something at home, all I had to do was say no and have something else, usually a snack.

I went cold turkey and haven't tried to rely on patches which I believe make quitting harder as you will inevitably just drag out the process of getting the nicotine out of your body thus putting yourself through hell for longer. I'm not saying I won't ever want a fag again but I am saying it's easier than the media seems to make out, you just have to want to do it, keep yourself busy for a couple of days and be willing to tell yourself no.

Anyone else quit who thinks the same as me? Anyone else think I'm a prick for calling you weak for not being able to quit?

/me goes to fetch biscuits Wink

Nice going Shaun. Never been a smoker myself but I've watched my friends try to quit. They must be really good at it now because some of them quit smoking several times a year. They're well-practiced by now.

Anyway, remember that your body is nicotine-free after 48 hours, so if you make it two days you're not addicted any more. After that it's just psychological.

And get yourself down the gym to work off all those cookies.

I did quit for about 4 weeks I believe before but started again, simply because I wanted to, in reality there was no reason at all for me to start again. Rolling Eyes

I made a fairly good job of giving up before I went home for Christmas last year, one of my mates was also giving up, and there's nothing like a bit of friendly competition to spur you on....

Anyway, went really well while at uni, probably went through less symptoms than you (although you may have been smoking longer; me 4 years of 20 a day) but when I got home it got a lot harder. About 90% of my mates smoke, and we basically live in the pub.

I was resilient for 5 whole days, then crumbled, now I'm back to square one.

Arse.

At least I now know that it's not necessarily as bad as everyone says, it's just a matter of doing it at the right time for you; if you don't absolutely want to give up (peer pressure convinced me I was happier as a smoker - not true), it probably won't work....

I gave up about 4 years ago now after smoking 20-30 a day for about 5 years. I decided to quit for money reasons due to wanting to move out. The firsy three days were fucking hell Mad I felt sick most nights whilst lying in bed, and had some painful headaches. But after those three days/nights it got so much easier, i used patches for the first week and i believe they helped.
Like you say Shaun, its the wtf do i do with my hands/time now? If you can occupy your mind your halfway there, but if you dont 100%want to quit you wont.

Yeah, it's times like when you're waiting around for someone, or sat with a pint, or after a meal, or sex, or, oh fuck it, I love smoking.

Roll on my next health trip, I'll have another stab at it then.

Might even get round to contacting those nice people at the gym too...

Yep, quitting is pretty easy. But watch out for weight gain.

LAst year i quit, and put on 2 stone. Started again for some reason.

Got rid of weight id put on and quit a month or two ago, piece of piss again, although i miss having something to do when bored in clubs.

But be warned, in times of stress when looking for non food/smoke related calming habits, this can happen...

Nb: This has accumulated since monday...

shaun I hope you make it, I stopped for a year and was weak willed when i lost me mam, however my sister gave up at the same time and she refrained from digging in to a pack of B&H, bitch keeps reminding me aswell Mad

when/if you get weak and think oh I shall just have one, bump this thread to remind yourself of what you said

the hardest thing for me is when we go for a Ride out, its great to stop have a chat, a fag, then back nailing the bikes, if only I would just smoke after sex, that would cut me right down Wink

I quit smoking every year at least once, sometimes 2 occasions,

When i quit, i can go without not smoking for 1 month, went 3 months once, and then i just randomly start again,

The reason I start is because of jack daniels, drinking and not smoking is the worst, besides that I control the habit well,

LOL was that a joke Palmer? You are just legally old enough to smoke, and not yet legally old enough to drink........ Laughing

Although I'm sure you do both on a regular basis, your world-weary experience at the age of 16? 17? did make me chuckle........ Laughing

Right let's get something straight.

Those of you like Palmer who says quitting is easy. It's quite obviously not when you have gone back to smoking. That's not quitting, that is letting the thoughts of smoking win you over again. Fact. Quitting is when you NEVER touch a cigarette again.

I've now been smoke free for almost 7 months. I am now beginning to feel like I have properly quit. I got offered a fag the other night and didn't even have to think twice about saying no. This is after 8 bottles of Stella when the usual weak people would have "drunk fag". I was almost urging when people put their fags out cause they smelt so rank.

Believe it or not, the hardest point of quitting wasn't the first two weeks, though the first day was very hard, it was actually after 5 months, when I started getting real cravings for a cigarette.

Toby, I know you haven't found quitting easy, but some people do find quitting a lot easier than others, it's all in the mind at the end of the day, some people are a bit reluctant to quit and it can be harder, i'm not saying that is how your frame of mind was. I smoked about 15 a day for about a year, not that much, but enough for me to be addicted. When drinking I could have smoked up to 40 a night.

The only reason I went cold turkey was so to not drag out the quitting process, once the nicotine is out of your system, which I believe is a fortnight, not 48 hours, then it gets a whole lot easier.

It is not hard to say NO, to a cigarette and the pride you can hold afterwards just helps you further.

Good luck Shaun, it will get harder, but that is an uphill struggle, once you have coped with the hard lot then it is all downhill from there and you can finally call yourself a non-smoker.

I also forgot to add that I have put on about a stone since I quit, but now I feel I can start to lose weight due to being able to eat less and the exercise rate is up, I've been doing 30 minutes on the bike machine everyday since Sunday, have lost 2lbs so far. Starting my Crunchy Nut diet today for a fortnight. Probably the only diet that works for me.

A very true statement!

My mum quit smoking for over 5 years, She used to say 'I had a cig last night' and when quizzed about it she'd explain that she would still smoke in her dreams!

Unfortunately she went back to smoking after all that time, and now smokes maybe 60 a day again Thumbs Down So no... It's not easy, unless of course you haven't been smoking all that long.

Its been alot easier because i dont live with smokers now, so when i have been upset i couldnt just steal one off them.

I honestly cannot see how couples last when one side quits. Way i see it you either both quit or both smoke.

Besides to start smoking again you have to buy a deck, not just have one or two. As you have to get back over that vile taste you learn to loathe within a week of quitting.

Quite right!

Me and shell both quit at exactly the same time and so could keeping egging each other as to not to quit. Whoever would start again would get shed loads of grief. Hence we are both still ex-smokers. Laughing

I smoked for about 4-5 years (10-15 a day) then quit cold turkey, was easy, so I thought, but it wasn't until over a year later that I was going through a rough patch after breaking up with girlfriend and going out more that I gave in Evil or Very Mad, Started just smoking socially at first then more and more, until I was back where I started.

This time I have stopped for 1yr 2 months, but I'm not so cocky this time, I find the actual first few week of giving up dead easy, its just a case of wanting to do it enough.
But realise that this time I've got to keep my gaurd up and make sure I remember why I wanted to give up smoking so much in the first place.

Once you smoke, your addicted for life! if you have enough will power to stop you starting again your ok, But you don't have the luxury like a person that has never smoked will have, of being able to have just the odd fag when your drunk.
It only takes one smoke to get you hooked again and undo a year or longers good work.

Good luck anyway Shaun and everybody else that is giving up Thumbs Up
