hi, unfortunately that looks to have made a bit of damage both to your barrel and piston! I am not sure on your type of barrell whether it is nicasil lined or has an iron liner? as if its nicasil, it will need to be relined, whereas if its a iron liner it can be rebored with new piston.

Do you have any idea what has caused this?

You need to sort the barrel before deciding what size piston you need. Though in your case as the barrel is plated, getting it bored out and replated works out about the same as a new standard barrel.

If it were me i'd get a new one and standard size piston.

Yep, tis nicosil plated. Looks a bit too much metalwork spattered atop that piston to be just rings to me... checked big end bearings?? Could well have blown bigend bearings and spat em up transfer port resulting in the damage to the rings. When was big end last done? May be worth doing a full rebuild anyways...

Got a pic of inside of cylinder head too? Likely that'll want some work doing to it also...

Also remove flywheel cover, turn by hand whilst holding conrod, feel if there's any points where it sticks and refuses to turn...

A little side play is normal,i wouldnt worry about that. From what you say your bearings are intact and are working fine.

It looks to have scored the barrel pretty well.Did you rebuild it yourself before? It looks as if it has done a fair few more miles than 4k since the rebuild.
