Can it be done?
I have an old laptop that i would so much like to be able just to plug in the fault finder plug from the bike and see whats up with it, But i expect its a specialised bit of software I need and only available from the dealer...Has any one came across any programmes like this to use or any one know of anything like this for all us to try out? Ive seen the AA/RAC do it with cars so surley some one could help out.

Shot in the dark but thjought id ask Rolling Eyes

Seeing as your bike was designed years before windows was invented I dont think you're going to find anything. The only bike i'm aware of that can plug into a pc without either having datalogging equipment or a power commander is the new ducati 1098.

All Fuel Injected Triumphs, Aprilia Caponord, Aprilia Futura and all 900 Benelli Tornado models, but you need a special bit of software called TuneBoy.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Well indeed!

I believe there is a similar tool for the Buell, but no one has reverse engineered it the same way that the Tuneboy guy has.

Do any bikes use the same kind of ODBC system that cars use?

They use the ODBII Connector but the pinout is different, and so its a different system.

If only some one could adapt the system and support bikes as well as making the software free to load.

Sadly this will result in dealers giving there info which I dont see happening. Confused

Unless theres some one out there who can? Wink

Won't work, because each connection requires an unlock code based on the serial number of the ECU. Its encrypted, so you need to know both your ECU serial number and the encryption algorithm. The guy who cracked the Sagem system is from australia, and charges £200 for the software and the unlock for one bike.

Which is still cheaper than the £4000 for the Triumph 'Gameboy' diagnostic unit! Smile

Could be possible with some low cost (measure Volts/Amps) electronics.

You need:
* Input from the crank angle sensor, and a feed from the ignition system which at least lets you see when No. 1 cylinder is firing. That lets you monitor the ignition timing and advance.

* one wire from each side of the earth strap, and a feed to the starter relay. Spin the starter motor with the ignition off, look at the current spikes on the earth strap. Amplitude and count gives you an idea of compression on each cylinder.

* as many other bits of wire which let you monitor the voltage on bits of wire you are interested in (charging voltage, bulbs, engine temp etc)

This was actually implemented on VW beetles in, wait for it... the early 70's

Still, it would be more effort than using a compression tester, multimeter and taking the timing cover off.....
