Okay, well before I'm start I'll just say I'm new, so sue me if I post this in the wrong place or I'm not allowed to swear or whatever. And just so you know, I'm prone to ranting about something completely irrelevant. To great length. Just wait until you see what I've got in store for you in this thread.

Anyway, please allow me to introduce myself: I'm a man of wealth and taste. Come on, you know the words. I'm Steve, but my friends call me Steve. I'm 15 (16 in about 4 months), which is pretty much why I'm here.

My first question to you lot is...when can I apply to take my CBT? Can I plan it right now and just turn up, ace it and ride off into the sunset on my birthday? Because that's always been my plan. Also, how long does it take? I've been doing a load of research (despite going through my mocks at exactly the same time) and I know pretty much what I have to do, and some of it sounds like a right bastard, but I'm sure I'll be fine...but I still have no idea how long it will take.

Also, what can happen if I were to de-restrict a 50cc bike immediately after the CBT?(Hypothetically - I know all of the risks and dangers of having that kind of ability when I should just be learning the most basic rules of the road, and the laws of physics. Except for the legal aspect.

Another question that's most likely been asked a million times before: what's the best bike to start off with? This is assuming I'm sticking with bikes for the rest of my life, and not just abandoning them at 17. I've had a dirt bike for about a year now and I've been hooked ever since, and they just seem like so much more fun. Anyway, money is no object here, and like I said, I'm a man of wealth and taste. So on that note, I was thinking of an Aprilia RS50, or whatever it is. You know, the one that looks like a proper bike but sounds exactly like every other moped out there. Basically I want to get used to riding one, and I just despise the look of step-in mopeds or whatever they're called.
I was thinking about a Yamaha TZR-50 but my Uncle has an Aprilia (and a Rieju RS2, but apparently that's not as good, or not in as good a condition or something) in stock, so that would make life easier. But basically I just want something that's fast for its size, looks fairly cool, and won't break down every time I try to push the engine. I'm assuming the Aprilia is the best way to go, since that won't be too hard to sell after a year or so either.

Once I've finished my CBT and I'm free to ride on the road, what advanced courses would you recommend? I have no idea about this bit, as I couldn't really be bothered to research it properly and I didn't trust anything I found.

When I'm 17, I'm not quite as sure as to what happens. Am I right in thinking that I an take an A2 (restricted) test and when I've passed that ride any size/speed bike restricted too 33hp? The learner plates are going to piss me off immensely if this is true, but fucking hell, an R1 at 17. Even if it is restricted. And it'll seriously fuck up the bike (considering the engine is, what, 180hp?) ow if words can describe how incredibly cool that would look. And how much more convenient it would be than a car to park. Anyway, fucking hell. Please tell me I'm right. And that I can get a full, proper licence on my 19th birthday if I get my timing right.

Right, I think I'm done. Sorry about the length. But at least you all know just how opinionated I am now.

Cheers for everything.

Steve.

I was 17 when I passed my A2 test, just a little over a month after doing my CBT. The 125 got a little boring and was quite embarrassing when it made the "Barrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp" sound.

I miss it now though.

hi and welcome

i have a rs50 brill little bike just takes a while to find one in good condish as for the tzr 50 funnily enough i went looking at one but the guy said he sold it that morning. the tzr is the better bike on reliability but it doesnt have the speed the rs does (tops out 50ish so im heard) and they are really hard to find another. option is the derbi gpr they have about the same speed as the rs in fact the 06/07 model of the rs run on the same engine as the derbi. (they are the main 3 sports style i was looking for). i wouldnt suggest buying new as the price almost drops buy 50% when you leave the showroom but thats up to you and you will know the bike hasnt been screwed up by some other 16 year old. you are welcome to ask me anything about the bike just pm on reply on here. my top out at about 65ish down hill Very Happy but i cant be sure as my clocks stop at 50
hope this helps

nick
there is a link to the rs50 i sometime go on if you have anything to ask about tuning then here is the place https://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21 (dont know how true some of the top speed "quotes" are though if you know what i mean)

Hi,
Like Joe said all the info is in the stickies at the top of the new bikers forum.

But basically you will need to apply for your provisional licence (get the form at the post office) before you take your CBT, then its just a case of completing your CBT and riding off into the sunset. Obviously with tax,mot and insurance Wink

As for de-restricting your 50 it will be illegal at 16 and will most likely invalidate your insurance if its checked after an accident.
Saying that most people do de-restrict them and unless your really unlucky nothing will come from it, apart from maybe being able to go 20mph faster Thumbs Up

As for what bike I'm not really sure, the RS50 seems to be the most popular sports 50. But personally I'd stick alway from the high reving sports 50's.
If its 2nd hand it will have probably had very little maintenance and have been thrashed everyday for a year. If you buy new your lose a load of cash when you sell it in a year.
Although saying that if you are wealthy like you say then I suppose that won't really matter.
I'd go for something a little tougher and cheaper for my first bike myself though........saying that I am the least cool person in the world and happily rode around on a Yamaha Pasola 50 when I was
16

Embarassed they were tough times ok...

Your right you can take the restricted test at 17, the learner plates aren't going to piss you off if you pass as you don't need them even if you are still on a restricted licence.
You could also get a 33bhp R1 at 17 but you'd have to be super weathly (and stupid) to pay the insurance!

Your restricted for 2 yrs after you take your test, so take it on your 17th birthday and its full power on your 19th.
Again lots of people take the 33bhp restrictors out early so have full power bikes long before there 19...

Laughing They aren't my actual bikes ( I use the term bikes losely Smile )

Kids these days are spoilt Mr. Green

My Pasola was an X-reg in Red it was in worst condition then the one in the picture, most of the front fairing was smashed off and the exhaust was completely rust colored.

The QT was even worse it had a topbox with no lid that used to collect water. Somebody stole the seat when it was parked up so I used to use a cushion in a plastic bag to sit on Razz
It used to reach nearly 40mph down a hill, faster then my mates Honda Vision that he paid £600 for........sucker!

unfortunately I don't have digital pictures of them, but had I of had a digital camera back then I would have probably been able to afford a better bike.

That pasola is ace Thumbs Up

i like little old school scooters with abit of character in them.

Personally if i was in your situation, I'd get a cheap ped to run about on for a year and spend the extra money youve saved on a decent 125 when you turn 17, 125's tend to hold their value and can be pretty expensive for what they are due to the demand for them (most beginners have to start somewhere), hence you can more often than not sell it on later for not much less than you paid for it. Whats the point in throwing money away?

So the general conclusion is don't spend your money on a cool top of the range sports 50 that your mates will think is great.

Buy a 20 year old rusty and knckered Pasola Mr. Green that goes half as fast. It will also stop you having a girlfriend for the entire time you own it.

I bet your glad you came on here asking for advice now. Wink

Thumbs Up yup, who cares what your mates think, i'd rather ride a 20 year old rust bucket (probably get more attention due to the quirkiness of the retro styley, i do, most of the girls i know love it) than have to sit on a sweaty bus.

Erm...typo. But my name is definitely Steve. Just so you know.

Also, yes, I am both wealthy and incredibly stupid. Then again, it isn't my money. Being the spoilt bastard I am I can afford to write off as many bikes as I want (but I'm not really that stupid). I've got to be honest, I do have a thing for that Pasola - but it's not quite the same thing as I have for the RS50. And as somebody else said, it would stop me having a girlfriend for the entire time I own it.

My dad is insisting that I get a brand new bike - he really doesn't trust second-hand ones despite selling mostly used cars for a living. Then again I wouldn't want to wind up with some worn-out bike that's been ridden to buggery and back, either.

I might just ride my 250cc dirt bike when I turn 17 - though I have no idea how many hp the engine has. But at least it would save some money, and it looks pretty damn cool. And I'm already familiar with it. That way I could just postpone buying a proper (road) bike until my dirt bike's written off/crushed into a cube. It's already road-legal, I have the tax sorted out and everything (my dad rides it sometimes too), so I suppose that would take out some of the hassle.

Thanks for all the replies, I never really expected this many. I think I get it now.
