Hi people.
Can anyone who has / had a GPZ500s tell me how long the dogbones on the rear monoshock are supposed to be?
It seems the last owner of my bike was female & probably very short as the lock nuts on the shock were near the top of the thread. I've since wound them down but i get the feeling she may have fitted a lowering kit too. I've ordered a second hand shock but i'm wondering whether i actually need to fit it or if i just need to fit the correct size dogbones to bring it back up to its original height.

My cousin took these photo's of me as i was leaving his place this afternoon. Does it look like the bike is riding low?
I'm worried about leaning too far as i constantly think the centre stand will catch the ground.

With no load, looking from the side, the rear side panel just covers a bit of the tyre. So with someone sat on it yours looks about right.

The seat height is pretty low to begin with. Someone of around 5'8" should be able to get both feet flat on the floor.

I don't think it has shorter dogbones fitted but there are longer ones available so if you aren't happy with the height fit some longer ones.

I can't quite remember how the centrestand is suposed to sit but it does look a bit low. Does it push up anymore?

The seat looks a little low to my inexperienced eye.

With dog bones:

Arrow Longer ones lower the seat and rear
Arrow Shorter ones jack the ass up Cool Thumbs Up

Hi

Does look a bit low to me. Has the shock been adjusted a bit?

All the best

Keith

the local bike shop said it looks like a shortened shock (last owner was female) but there's still 8 coils on the spring (not sure if a shortened shock needs a shortened spring). I've oredered a 2nd hand shock which looks different to the one on there (red spring) so i'll try that. This morning i adjusted the locking nuts to their lowest position to give as much height as possible, but it didn't do much too help.

Hi

A few pattern shocks have red springs. Not seen a standard GPZ500 shock with a red spring.

If you cut some coils from the spring you actually make it stiffer. For the spring to compress it twists the metal. Longer the metal is the easier it is to twist, and the more coils there are then the longer the metal is.

GPZ500 is fairly short, but if the short shock is in decent condition then it probably has a reasonable resale value.

All the best

Keith

Well its a monoshock Very Happy

They are a doodle to fit, just a little fiddly if you leave the wheel on Brick Wall

Just remember to try and clean the little spindles and reapply grease to help with the maintenance next time Wink Thumbs Up Be careful to torque the nuts properly, the ones on the FZR 'shook' themselves loose and another FZR owner on here found that theres had completely come loose and fallen off Shocked

Dog bones are 160mm centre to centre.

There is a GPZ500sD1 unitrak and swingarm assembly in my downstairs room.

Don't ask Rolling Eyes .

There's a whole GPZ500 spread around between my hallway, living room and kitchen just now.. Embarassed

It's a lot bigger when it's spread around in pieces than when it's all put together!
