I'm thinking about getting a cheepo digital camera so it doesn't matter when it (or I) gets trashed at parties - I've found one that takes 300k pictures but don't know if this would be worth having - can anyone let me know please?

Sorry I've not been around for a while then come back with a totally random question but I just know that someone here will know the answer as you're all so lovely (creep, creep!) and I promise I'll be back once the sun's come out and I've blown the cobwebs off the SV Mr. Green

FWIW I always believe in getting the most pixels for your money and optical zoom.

However, bought the lad a cheapish digital camera for Xmas. Around £50 (from Comet - not a brand I recognise). Has 5 meg pixels, no viewer just a screen and digital zoom. Takes SD card. He likes it because it has a game built in (and I think can maybe play MP3s - don't quote me on that though Confused) When used at Xmas inside with the flash the pictures were sometimes iffy with some blur. Since seen some he's taken outside and the pics look great.

So not sure if that answers your question. Suspect all cheapish digital cameras will have problems with indoors. Unless you go for named brand, Sony, etc. but then you're not into cheapish cameras anymore.

IMO for parties, night on the town, etc. I still think the best option is to get a disposable 35mm camera and when developed get the images on CD for you to play around with/reprint later.

300k is about what older camera phones are capable of.

Not very good I'm afraid.

But the most important thing isn't necessarily the number of pixels.
For instance an old Canon EOS-1D with 4 MP will blow away any modern consumer camera with 11 MP as far as picture quality is concerned

The most important thing is the quality of the lens, and sensor, not the number of pixels

But if you're looking at 300K pixels, that is too little to get anything decent.
I would start at at least 3 MP and go for a decent brand (Canon/Nikon/Fuji/Sony/Pentax) rather than some non-descript cheap sounding Korean brand

In the end it depends what you want the pictures for

I don't think I'll bother then - I'll go with the disposable camera and CD option I think - thanks all for your help!

As said, lens is very important.

If you can stretch to it, I liked the little Casio cameras that can be got for not much these days.

Some of the newer phone cameras are very good - if you're on a contract or considering one, there's some good deals out there as well.

300k is 640 x 480, really even for internet publishing at 800 x 600 is a sensible minimum, though on the net you rarely need more than 1024 x 768.

I've got a 1/2 decent one at home - just saw a pretty pink one for £10 and thought 'I could take that to parties!' but I can quite happily live without though

Hi

300k is pretty small. However as mentioned above the lense quality and sensor quality are important. A 1.3mp camera will still produce fairly decent normal sized prints.

For cheap cameras another place to consider:-

£35 for a 3.2mp Olympus with a zoom.

All the best

Keith
