GPZ400R-A few questions

Hey,

I'm nearing the end of completing my GPZ400R restoration. The bike looks great and im quite pleased with it. However theres a few things im a bit concerned with.

-I've filled the forks with the correct oil and to the correct level, however there still very stiff. They do move down slightly and then come back up but only go down by about 30mm.

-At some point someone (Not me) has dropped something metallic in the tank, like nuts and bolts. Will it harm my engine to leave them put or do they need removing? Its definitely not the float as ive had that out.

well for the forks, maybe the springs are stiffer than standard? or they have been modified in some way? also does your bike have one of them anti dive systems? does that function properly? for stuff in tank get a magnet and tie a bit of string to it and go fishing Smile

Hi

Correct level is normally measured with the springs out and the forks fully compressed. You didn't by any chance check the levels with the forks extended?

forks are air assisted, maybe you've put too much air in the forks try to release some a little bit at a time.

Thanks for your replies. I think i made the mistake of measuring the oil level with the forks extended. ooops. Ill have to redo that again with them compressed.

I took the anti-dive off. It was useless and had corroded away inside.

I couldnt remove the metal bits inside. So i left them. They must have been there since i got the bike 2 years ago so i cant see them doing any harm.

your anti dive isnt just blanked off is it? if it is your forks will be super damped all the time. you need to have passageways for the fork oil to pass through in your blanking plates if you have removed the existing anti dive system.

Hey,

Yep my dad made me some blanking plates. I took the advice from a guy who had the GPZ600R and blanked his off in exactly the same way.

He sed he had no problems so i'm thinking it will be fine. When its all done its going to the local garage to be checked over. Its only costing 40 squid. At least ill know if theres anything seriously wrong.

Hey,

I measured the level of oil in the forks when they where compressed, as per the data sheet. The forks are still far to solid though. I try to push them down and they move prehaps 1cm then do not return.

When i rebuilt them and they had no oil or blanking plates the forks did move freely and return. So the problem is not with the rebuilding Very Happy
