the old speedo cable on my '02 snapped. No big deal...bought a replacement from Wemoto.

slotted new cable in and speedo now works....until I hit 50mph and then there is this god awful screech which won't go away unless I slow down to 10mph. If I accelerate again it starts at 50mph and won't stop no matter how fast I go.

Anyone ever heard of this happening before? Could it be the cable or the hub in the wheel or maybe the speedo unit in the dash? If I unplug the cable everything is fine but no speedo isn't really practical with all the greed cameras around.

Thanks!

Did you oil the cable?

I have a problem with my gpz500s speedo too so i thought i'd jump on this thread. My speedo never works from standstill when pulling away. Sometimes it'll start working after changing into 3rd gear but regularly it wont work at all. I've checked its connected properly to the front wheel & it seems to be attatched to the speedo gauge. I haven't noticed the speedo to start or stop working after any irregular bumps so not sure what's causing the problem. Any help would be great.

have the taken the wheel off and checked the splines in the housing?

the condition of the back of the clocks? is it slipping due to being badly fitted?

I tried oiling both ends of the cable - I even took out the inner core and oiled that. I squirted oil inside the outer cover as well before I put the inner core back in. Still screeching around 50mph. Briefly stopped whenever I hit a bump in the road but only for a second.

In the end I bought another speedo cable from Wemoto and tried that. All works fine now Very Happy

Guess I just had a faulty cable. Ahh well.

goes to show ya Smile
I went through a set of brake pads, loads of stress and no bike shop believing I had a problem cos my brakes screached.
I finally persuaded tradedirect to sell me some bobbins, turns out my disks were fused with the stock bobbins causing them to not to be floating disks, heating them up and the vibrations caused my brake pads to loosten off the metal backing
