I am not sure if it is me. but, I live in Surrey and I ride every day to anywhere. When I started biking about 95% of bikers would nod/wave but now when out on rides or travelling to work I have noticed that the day to day riders do not acknowledge other bikers in anyway. Majority of the weekend riders do this,, I always send a nod to any biker I see, even if they are on 'L' plates. I just see it as a sign of keeping the close knit we have of helping each other and the friendliness of man to man on bikes.

Now it have mainly been the Harley dudes doing this but I have also noticed a few sports bikes doing the same.

My question/query is;

Arrow Firstly, has anyone experiencing the same?
Arrow Secondly, is there a rift between sports bikes and Harley riders I do not know about (baring the obvious Jap crap comments(and they ride on Yank wank so not much better! Wink ))?

It is strange as it makes me lose the spark a little!

What are your thoughts?

I find it happens.

I live in Croydon. I think a lot of people in this area are buying bikes as a means to commute. It isnt for the love. They are just convenient.

Always nod. Dont bother with tracksuit wearing ped boi's - which are plentiful around here. Did to start with but the kindness has been ebbed away with their antics.

I allways nod apart from the odd time my concentration is needed infront of me. I find alot of bikers nod when i nod first and others will nod no matter what.

Its a sign of respect between bikers and its great, makes you feel proud to be a biker. The only people i dont is chav scooter/ped riders as they are just an inconvenience on the road.

Harley riders just feel their the traditional bikers and what we are on doesnt count us as bikers. Were just crazy mofo's to them Thumbs Up

Said it before, saying it again...

Big auto-Go-Ped riding middle aged middle managers with their open faced helmets, bolt upright seating position and bright yellow jackets are the most unfriendly bunch on the road. Never a nod or a wave...

I don't nod without knowing what school they attended, their postcode, their solvency status, which regiment they served with, a sample of DNA and 2 letters of recommendation from persons of professional standing.

(Note: Calling oneself a "professional" when one is merely a driver, plumber or other such manual tradesman is not sufficient. And probably illegal. If not, it damn well should be.)

Who are you calling a snob?

WOW do you have many of these outstanding?

I find if i do the straight forward up down vertical nod i often don't get a response from weekend warriors.

However if i do the diagonal type nod thing then i always get a response. Maybe as it looks more meaningful and genuine? who knows lol!

I wave at anything, bikes, cows, horses, kids even a cop with a video camera thing last week.
As for the Harley guys, they think that ridding a Hog is so masculine and tough that they must try and look hard at all times.
Of course those of us that do not do Harley agree that they all look very manley but in a sort of leather trousers with no bum in them, big black moustache and little leather cap with chains way.

I nod to everyone. On my commute I usually don't get a single nod returned and thats from all bikers; lots of scooters, a couple of crossers, and a couple of proper bikers who I usually see, one who looks like a courier, someone on a big Honda Pan Euro.

I guess every bugger is too miserable as they're on their way to work... I dunno? Or maybe it's just cos I'm on a little 125 with L plates and I'm not worthy of a response?

I seem to get a lot more nods when I am in full leathers rather than when I am just in my jeans (when I will only get a few).

i find that i do get nods half the time, but i think i would get more if i wasnt on my 125 with L plates Sad (cant wait to do test Twisted Evil ) i have also noticed that cops pay more attention to me that anyone else including other bikers Confused i think its because of my L plates. i dunno altho i do get a weird feeling inside me when i do get a nod, i think thats just me Embarassed Razz

When i was on my scooter i only nodded back and never initiated the nod as i knew most bikers would have already steriotyped me, i now nod to everyone except those on scooters who i have steriotyped unless they nod first.

Today i came across only 3 bikers, i think its a bit cold for them/you, i nodded to all of them and got not one back.

Previous to this i seem to have a good reply rate.

How about that for taking it seriously.

At one point on the ashby road up here in lufbra, i was giving a biker the thumbs up whilst he was giving me the thumbs up in the other direction. The commoraderie is much more accounted for in rural areas where it's a more passionate thing. Usually in london, it's the sportsbike riders or 125 n00bs that nod at me cos they like my sound echoeing through the tall buildings.

I've got another one here. ANybody attempted to give another biker a Hi 5 to another biker going the other way at speed Thumbs Up Wink . As Borat himself would say

Hiiighhh Fiiivee! Razz Thumbs Up

This will probably sound a bit strange but the whole bikers nod thing was one of the attractions to biking for me. It was like a little community that those pesky car/van/lorry drivers couldn't touch Laughing

I nod to all bikers, except for the annoying scooter/moped crew who reckon they are the new Valentino Rossi Wink
