Okay, i bought a cheap moped and since i have had it the electric start does not work. It kick starts first time every time. There isnt even a click when i press it, ive checked all wiring and thats fine. Anyone else reckon i need a new starter motor?

Have you tried giving the battery a quick charge or assuming it's a 12 volt system, try connecting it to a car battery via some jump leads.

Check the fuses & relays. If you can it might be worth connecting the starter straight to the battery to see if it turns (which if it does could point towards the starter solenoid).

Don't write the starter motor off straight away.

To be shure its the starter or not. take the starter motor off and wire it up to your battery like this >https://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r220/jamie_stokes_2/pppp.jpg

The wires on the starter will be red and black connect the red to the + and the black to the -
(one the battery )
use the battery off your bike to do this !

Turn the ignition on and switch on the lights.
Do they come on without the engine running?
Do they only come on after kick-starting?

With the engine off and the lights on, hit the starter.
This would pull a huge draw from the battery and the lights will dim as a result. No dimming = no power reaching starter motor.

There is a starter solenoid. This can be shorted out to test it, but only do this if you know how to do it safely. Use can use a heavy pair of pliers to touch both large terminals and this will send power directly to the starter (as per the diagram above but with none of the disassembly).

Yeh thats another thing, nothing works without the engine running, not even the fuel guage, should of said really Embarassed

Erm, also if its at really low revs things like the indicators and brake light dont work.

Maybe big electrical fault?

That's a distinct lack of battery juice there... charge or replace the battery and it should all spring back to life... then look at the bike's charging circuit as summat's dead...

Your battery is flat. There's absolutely no point trying to do anything else on the bike until you have either charged it (and made sure it's holding a charge) or replaced it. Using a car battery and jump leads is the best and cheapest idea.

First rule of fixing anything electric. Make sure you actually have some electricity.

BUT, when connecting a set of those little neon washer jet things on (cheap way to test for a quid) they light up with the battery Confused Well they did, i havent actually tried it lately. Will charge battery overnight.

...and almost completely pointless Smile

You'll probably find that your starter motor will try to draw just a little bit more current out of the battery than an LED.

from work i can tell you the battery is probably fucked. It's probably not much for a new bugger just make sure you dispose of the old one properly. For the sake of about £15 it'll be a cheap option.

Unlikely. How would it start in the first place? The power for the ignition is coming from the alternator, so that's OK. Also the fact that indicators are failing at low revs fits the whole pattern.

New battery should cure it.
