I've been thinking recently.
In the past few years, local councils have been under increasing pressure to increase their recycling figures as we have some of the worst in Europe.
Currently, I have a black box for paper/thin card (ready meal wrappers etc). A green box for glass and plastics and soon a brown wheely bin for garden refuse.
This I dont really have a problem, if the council make it a bit easier for me to do 'my bit', I'm all for it!
However, why is it, when I commute to work (central London) I'm bombarded with a waste of materials.
Every day I can pick up:
Metro (free morning daily paper).
City AM (free morning daily paper).
This is London (free evening daily paper).
London Lite (free evening daily paper).
Flyers for salsa dancing, new restaurants, car rentals, fitness classes, more free magazines (GAT, Sport etc).
Surely councils such as Westminister, Corp of London, Islington, Kensington etc shold refuse these papers to be distributed on their streets? They are not environmentally friendly, the make the streets look a mess and they casue a lot of unessecary waste. Not to mention the annoying peopel who try to thrust the thing into your hand.
Would it not be common sense to just ave the ES and your usual daily rag that you paid for, like it used to be only a few years ago?
