I got told that my bike would take between 2 and 4 hours to do depending on how fiddly it turned out to be. cost at the garage I asked at was £32 an hour. Oh yeah and my bike is a VFR400 (very fiddly due to small confined space of engine). Havent had it done yet.

Hi

Carb balance is most noticably wrong at idle. Plenty of bikes sound like a barely oiled bag of spanners when the carbs are out of balance. Far less noticable at higher revs.

It is not a long job. I expect they have quoted you something silly as it may not be easy to get at the carbs on the VFR, or they expect the fairing to be a pig to get off.

Buy some Mercury vacuum gauges and do the job yourself. It is not difficult. However, it should be one of the last jobs you do, as adjusting the valves afterwards (for example) will send them back out of balance

All the best

Keith

doesd it matter about balancing at full throttle or is it just at part throttle and low revs?

Hi

They are just balanced at idle. You cannot adjust the balance seperatly at high and low revs anyway, and if a carb is pulling 1cc more of air at idle then it makes far more difference than 1cc at full revs.

All the best
