Well, was on a ride out with a few new guys and some old ones and I met the road along with the bike.

Was a tight 35km/h turn infamously known as lemmings corner.
Its even posted as such.

Anyway I wasn't pushing it but since the road is quite narrow a rock on the road mid turn (bout the size of your fist) was enough to throw me off line and straight toward the guard rail.

I was just about pulled up when I met the gravel shoulder of the road and the bike just went out from under me.
I was so damned close to stopping its not funny Brick Wall
If there was an extra 6 inches of road on that side I reckon I would have made it.

After pulling the bike out from under the guard rail I got to assess the damage.
Not too bad. Some nasty fairing scrapes with a few cracks (should have had bungs) and a nasty dent in the relatively new can.

Once I righted it and stopped for a quick smoke, I noticed there were bits and pieces of different bikes all over the place.
Bits of different coloured fairings, a screen, crash bung and all sorts of shit.
One of the guys on the ride said his son laid his down in that exact same spot.

While Im unmarked and only went down light, I'm peeved that it was such a simple thing that caught me out.
I would have been happier if I had of been flogging it.
At least then I would have been able to blame something.
A rock mid corner is just shit luck.
Always thought it would be a cager or deisel that got me.

Anyway happy viewing

Ouch!

Yeah sometimes, shit happens. Binned my XBR500 (with a similarly new micron just fitted) sliding on gravel a few years back.

Damage doesnt look to bad, gonna replace/tidy the fairing or is it a streetfighter project?

Thats unlucky mate. Yesterday one of my fairings came off while I was riding but I didn't notice until I got home, so I done the whole 60 mile loop again to look for it, but never seen it. This makes me realise it could have been worse.

Just on a side note, if you want to fix the yoshi, it might be worth asking if they will sell you a new sleeve maybe? Blue flame resleeve but they are UK based.

"laid her down" sounds slightly better than "fell off" I suppose.

That's not damage, just a few status-marks to show the bike's actually ridden Wink.

Thanks Kara for resleeve idea. Might be worth looking into.
Food for thought anyway.
Was considering some heat resitant tape maybe a carbon look to cover that end of the can. Not sure if it will work or not?
Advice welcome on this one.

As for streetfighter or not. I like my fairings to much.
Once fixed yes I might consider crash bungs.
Was thinking about them not long ago.
Should have done more than think by the look of it.
Since it was such a slow speed thing they might have saved me some grief.
Oh well who knows. Nothing can be done about it now.

Don't think bungs would of helped much on this one, if anything they might of made the bike 'dig in' when it was sliding on the gravel.

Doubt it, gravel on a road is just a thin layer of stones, not a thick layer as per a track. Crash bungs would have saved most of the cracks/scuffs in the fairings.

On the bright side, his frames not been scratched. It's much easier to replace the fairings than the frame.

.

Don't know the corner so you might be right but I know of a few run off gravel traps where the gravel is at least an inch deep. Must of been a fair bit of gravel for him to drop considering he had almost stopped.

Crash bungs might of caused more damage to the frame when it went under the guard rail.

The gravel wasn't quite track deep but it was deep enough.
There is a pic below of the corner and you can see the shit on the side of the road.
Alot of this is bits and pieces of bikes.
Ive also attatched a bit of info bout the infamous corner as well.

Thing that shits me is it was the slowest corner of the day and I was going easy. Maybe if I was going harder I would have cut the line more and not even hit the rock.
Lots of things coulda, shoulda and woulda but its not so bad.

Seeing the numbers on the write up about the corner I wonder how many incidents like mine go un-noted and arent included in the numbers.

Bad luck about the rck and damage.
Have to ask though, if riding with others what was different about your line?
Was the rock there for the others or put there because someone else had a dodgy line through the corner?

Hope you get the bike fixed.

The only reason I can think of that I picked up the rock and the rider ahead of me didn't was that I had dropped off the pace coming through these turns.
Therefor because I had been pushing it a little previously and knew these tight turns were coming up I think I relaxed and wasn't paying 100% attention.

My line was wider than I would have ran it if I had of been more focused and intent on a little more pace through the turn.
At the end of the day I've tried to figure out how I was the lucky one and I am yet to come up with an answer.

In a way Im glad it was me due to the speed I was doing.
With such nice bends others rip through and I fear the outcome if someone who was "having a go" ran over the same thing.
Although it is all so possible that if I had more speed the bike would have just shook its head and kept on going.

People have asked if I paniced or shit myself.
I tell them that I didn't because I was too busy trying to keep it up to think about anything else.
Yes the adrenaline went up and a small case of the shakes followed but as it was all happening the last thing on my mind was actually binning it.
I was more focused on pulling it up and making the turn.

Didn't turn out that way though

Regarding sleeving the can, I had an off on my bike a couple of months ago and to clean it all up I am respraying the plastic, it still leaves me with 2 dented and scraped cans to sort. I found a bloke on fleabay who sells 1mm thick carbon fibre sheeting that my wallet is made from - nice and flexible and easy to wrap round a can, just need to find a permenant way of glueing the things down.

If you want his details give me a nod and I will try dig them out, he reckoned he can cut any size needed.

cheers

leigh Very Happy
