Morning all. I bought a second hand bike from a dealer around 5 months ago and with moving house and stuff shortly after, i never got around to registering it in my name. I am now selling the bike. Can i just pass the books on to the next owner or do i need to register it to me first before i sell it? Will it show up as a gap in the ownership or something if i just pass it on? The tax also ran out last september if that makes any difference.

surely the dealer sent his side of the paperwork off otherwise it would be registered to him. When you buy a bike its usually the seller that informs the dvla of the change of ownership.

i would suspect that the bike is registered to you at your old address so there would be no 'gap' in the ownership. As far as i know you have two options:

1) fill out a request form from the DVLA for a new V5C to be issued - £19 and around 4 weeks

2) Sell the bike with no V5C and let the new owner apply for it. The problem with this is you may have trouble selling or the price may be affected.

But there are no legal implications? I thought maybe i HAD to register it to me. I don't see the point in registering it to me now that i'm selling it, unless i need to.

i suspect that it IS already registered to you if you bought it from a dealer, albeit registered at a different address. Legally yes you should have updated the DVLA for speeding tickets etc but hey you may have lost the V5C and havent got time to re-apply before selling the bike.

If youre trying to avoid any potential speeding tickets / tax fines i dont think it will be possible by just passing the bike on without it ever being registered to you as the new person who registers it and possibly receives the fines will just tell them where it got it from, ie. you.

Did you SORN it in that time? cos if not you could have a CCJ waiting for you at your old address.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
