Good day everyone!

After passing my test recently here in Hong Kong, I have been taking an advanced Post License riding Course and the course has given me the chance to try out a variety of bikes e.g. Parallel Twins and V Twins. What is disappointing is that I haven't got the chance to 'test ride' an Inline 4, e.g. Honda CBR 400.

I would be very grateful for some guidance on how the clutch and throttle controls vary from: -

1. 125cc learner legal single cylinder 4 strokes.
2. 250 cc v Twins
3. 250-400cc parallel twins
4. 400 - 600cc inline 4s.

Is there anything particular I need to note about starting out on 1st gear with an inline 4? I hear that I should leave the throttle alone and just release the clutch slowly.

Many thanks in advance everyone, and have a good week ahead.

Releasing the clutch slowly without any throttle on an IL4 will just inch you forward until you stall really. You should be pulling away at around 3 to 7k revs.

Can't say much about the others, except the 125cc 4 strokes will probably want about the same revs to pull away, the only difference is their redline is considerably lower than the IL4 600s. Wink

CB500 = Parallel Twin... Can let clutch out completely (slowly) with no throttle and bike will pootle along at 5mph just on idle revs... other than that, proper pull off speed = gentle twist of throttle and it'll pull away nicely from 2.3k rpm...

If you want to ride a PTwin fast pull off at about 7k with clutch slip and change up the gears at about 8k. (You do on a GS500E anyway).
