I started off riding a Kwak AR50 when I was 16 for a few years, changing it to a 80cc big bore kit Very Happy. When I passed my driving test I ended up not returning to bikes until the traffic became an pain so started riding a NRG scooter which was bought to go with the motorhome. But not being able to go on the motorway to work was a pain too, so deceided to take my DAS test and dust off my Grandad's Honda CM200!! Passed my DAS 1st time in Nov '06 after 4 lessons on a riding school's Hornet 600. Done about 1,000 miles since then on the CM200 still getting used to the skinny cheap tyres in the wet and drum brakes!! but building good confidence in the dry, but I'm angling for something bigger as the Hornet gave me a good taste.

Anyway looking at insurance for either a Yamaha R6, Kwak ZX 6R or CBR600RR online for an idea. At the mo i'm with Bennetts (cheapest) on the CM200 at the pricely sum of £102 Very Happy so have used this site to do comparisons (All TPFT quotes);

R6 - £360
ZX 6R and CBR - £1100+ !!

Why is the R6 so much cheaper or do paricular companies do better deals for certain bikes. I could accept a couple of hundred quid more but not 3x as much. So on this bases i'm leaning towards an R6!?

Here are my insurance stats: 30 in May of this year, getting married in April which is when i'll possibly start looking, SK postcode which is normally deemed low risk - is on the car anyway, passed das in Nov '06, garaged, integral to house.

Any suggestions, i haven't tried ringing anywhere as I'm not near getting the bike yet, so done just online quotes. Any one with the above 3 bikes with similar age etc?

Thats fairly bonkers? It doesn't make much sense to me that Insurance companies could vary values so much between bikes? Which model and what year bikes did you check? According to Parkers the 03 CBR600RR is insurance group 14 and the 03 R6 is group 15??

I know, I think the main objective of my post is too try and find out why there is such a difference!!

All three were quoted on being a 2004 model and same value, basically I just amended the bike details on the quote to a different bike.

Same here, I'm 17, in full time work.
R6 quotes come in around the £800 mark, whereas GSXR, ZX6R, CBR, all come in well over £1000. I reckon It's just that they've got an R at the end. Thats the only thing I can see, which is a shame as it limits me really. Crying or Very sad

Edit: All with Bennetts aswell.

Hmmm thanks to this thread I've now researched the possibility of getting myself and R6 and I'm totally flabbergasted by the fact that I can get insured on one for not much more than a VFR400... Which I'm aiming for as my next bike.

Whats gives. I'd previously looked a GSX-R's and CBR600F and decided the insurance costs were too prohibative. Now I've got a true 600 sports option.

Oh the decisions

Silly isn't it.

According to searches on the web a few years ago the Yam was quite dear on insurance due to its popularity with riders and thieves. Theres seems to be alot of choice on R6s for sale but less on the CBR and even less on the ZX 6R.

The Yamaha dealer is up the road aswell, plus a few biker mates have bought from there and know the owner, so its looks like an R6 then. Very Happy The only concern I have on it, as its one of the more powerful bikes, its mainly top end power and I don't want to be ringing its neck often, but from an old 200cc to a sports 600, I don't think I'll be thinking its a slow thing even using half the revs!!

But the R6 has an 'R' just not at the end!!! Laughing

Ooh forgot to add, 6pts on my licence too, maybe they don't matter on a hooligan R6!! Very Happy

I think Bennetts has the 2003-05 R6's down as 99-2002's because there the same price insurance.

Insurance Groups are a bit of a mythical thing. It seems insurers often use their own scales and class bikes in their own way. There are no "official" templates on what classifies a bike in a specific group but there are some places that quote insurance groups alongside bike models.

Parkers offers IG information with their bike specs.

eg: Honda VFR400 is Insurance group 12.

That made me get a quote for an R6 - and now I know I can actually insure it for only £150 more than my 500.

How does that make sense?

Insurance doesn't make sense, this is why you need to shop around.

I was going to ask you what your insurance was like as you had just got the ZX 6R. I do like the Kwak, plus its bit better on power having a slightly bigger engine. Very Happy
