PostPosted: 14:15 - 05 Feb 2007    Post subject: 3 day or 5 day direct access? Reply with quote

I had an automatic scooter for a couple of years, and moved on to a 125 manual bike almost 6 months ago (after renewing my CBT, this time on a manual bike). Now I want to take my direct access, but not sure if it's wise to go for the 3 day course (since I have some experience riding manual) or stick with the 5 day anyway (since 3 day is all on 500cc). Any advice?

Did both CBTs in London, at metropolis (vauxhall), are they also good for direct access or can you recommend someplace better (if there's any difference)?

Thanks

I personally would go for the 3 day course, as you've already got your CBT and a bit of road experience.

Some training centers will do an assesment for you so they can recommend the best option.

I'd go with the 3 day option, 2 days on a 125 won't help you, what's the point in spending more money on something so pointless?

The only flipside is that it'll probably be easier to learn how to pass the test on a smaller bike.

That settles it then. Booked my theory test and then I'll do the 3 day when that sorted.

Is the 3 day priced the same in all London training centres? Costs £410 in metropolis.

Just make sure you read up on the maneuvers and practice this on your own, i.e signalling, rear observations and life savers. You don't want to be spending hard earned cash on practicing this. I did a 3 day course and presumed I had the basics in the bag but spent most of the first day annoying my trainer because I didn't, ended up spending a lot of the first day getting the basics in, ended up wasting the first day and wasn't great for the nerves.

I was riding on L's for a year, then did a 2 day DAS - day and a half training, test on the second afternoon. Passed with two minors, so you should be fine with a 3 day course.

What test centre does Metropolis use?

I did 5 days. Day 1 was CBT - so no need for that in your case. Day two was pootling round on 125s for the those of us who had only ever done CBT - still making stupid mistakes like trying to downshift without using the clutch, leaving signals on for 10 minutes etc. If you can ride half-competently you'll be fine on 3 days.

Pricing in London will be similar across most London centres. £410 sounds about right for the 3 day course. I paid around 600 for the 5 days.

I asked them that but they said they use several, will be assigned when I book it. Is there a particule that's better or is it just to check out the roads around the test centre?

Some test centres are considered easier than others due to the nature of the roads in the area - though the test routes are "officially" all the same difficulty.

You'll do plenty of practising in the area around the test centre you use - even if its only on the day (like mine was) - so you'll learn any awkward bits and it won't be a problem. The instructors will know which "features" can cause problems on the test so they'll make sure you're well clued up in advance.

I agree with everyne else, the 3 day course should do it.

I had been riding a 125 for a few months, and then did the 3 day DAS and I was ok.

I think 5 days are for real noobies IMO

I could of done with a 2 day course as on the 3rd we sat around mainly just chatting. It takes it out of you, remember going home each day - falling asleep within 10 mins
