Hi.

I've tried looking it up but i can't find a reference to the new 'restictions' on the direct access course - ie - having to ride a 125cc for a certain amount of time???

Is this correct or have i got the wrong end of the stick? Confused

Direct access means you can ride any power, any capacity as long as you are over 21 at the moment or 24 if the new licensing comes in.

British motorcycle riders face new curbs under plans to harmonise driving licences across the European Union.

The new rules, which will come into force in 2012, are intended to counter the rising number of motorcycle accidents.

Under the arrangements teenagers will still be able to ride a 50cc moped from the age of 16 but will have to wait until they are 19 if they wish to use a machine of more than 125cc. Currently 17- and 18-year-olds may do so provided they have passed a motorcycle test and the machine has a maximum engine performance of no more than 33bhp.

At the other end of the scale, the system allowing 21-year-olds to ride any motor-cycle provided that they have passed their test will be scrapped. The minimum age will rise to 24, unless they have gained at least two years' experience on larger machines of up to 47 bhp.


I thought the majority of accidents involving motorcycles also involved a car. They should introduce something to the car test for bike awareness, maybe more "life-savers" etc like there are so many for the motorcycle test (which is also changing having more included)

As for age restrictions etc, arent most involving larger cc bikes and older "born again" riders?

so what theyre really doing is making it harder for the 'new generation' of people to get an easy way into biking. Or just strengthening the restriction law which is kind of a loop hole for being hard to police.

IMO they should make(new) car drivers take a CBT, then see how we have to cope Thumbs Up

3 people at work want to take their CBT and are asking me the dangers.

I simply say 'other drivers.' Cool
