After washing my bike yesterday & generally tidying it up a bit I've noticed its using a bit of oil.
I haven't found any oil patches in all the places i've parked the bike so i only assume its burning it.
What problems with the engine would cause it to use oil?
I did an oil change at the beginning of december & since then its dropped from the top of the sight glass to just below the half way mark on the sight glass (not sure how much that is but I put in 3 litres when changing the oil & filter).

Most bikes use oil to a degree. If it isn't smoking excessively nor leaking to any amount then just keep topping it up. Be thankful you don't own a thunderace Very Happy

how old is it?
How many miles have you done?
do you tend to (i'd say thrash but its a gpz500) Blurt it whilst its cold?
if its old the seals could be worn, a good one or two are around the gear change and final drive holes in the case.
If you have done a fair few miles since the last change it might just need a service, like geri said, bikes use oil.
if you thrash a bike whilst its cold it not only doesnt do it any good, things arnt up to temp so theres a higher chance of you burning oil that way.
if you think its dropped a lot change the oil and filter and then keep an eye on it.
If its still using too much oil take it to a shop, if its burning it the piston rings are a good place to start.

It's a 1996 D3 model. It's coming up to 48,000 mies. I must admit i do like to take it into the top of the rev range (I have to just to keep up with bigger bikes) but only when the temp gauge needle has risen to the halfway point on the gauge. Until it's warmed up i'm gentle with the revs & change up early to avoid making the engine rev high (i don't make it struggle eaither!).

I've only had the bike since december, started riding it beginning of this month so not sure how it was treated before.

I've done between 800-900 miles since the last oil change

So it's used maybe a pint in 900 miles.

Not that bad I'd say, especially if you're revving it hard now it has a few mile on it. You'll find it uses more if you cane the nuts off it.

Kawasakis were always known for 'disappearing' oil, the old Z-series were notorious for it and the GPZ is the next one on. I once burned a litre and a half of oil in five hours in mine by sitting it on the redline all the way up the A1. Ride it in a more sedate manner and it was fine.

As long as it isn't dropping out of it or producing loads of smoke I'd just keep topping it up. It's probably just the rings getting a bit loose in the bore. Mine started getting silly after a while (I was having to top it up every time I put fuel in) and I eventually bit the bullet and bunged some new rings in it. Still using the engine now (in a different bike), done over 70k miles and running fine.

My gpz uses oil, mayb 300ml between oil changes if I'm doing long runs (ie uni and back)

just keep an eye on the levels, I think all gpz's burn a bit of oil.

Ive owned a few gpz 500's and all have used a little oil to some degree. Most were over the 20,000 mile mark.Yours being 48,000 is perfectly acceptable to use a little oil.Keep on top of it (as said before) and you should have no problems. They are great bikes Thumbs Up

I have a GPZ500S, D6 model and change the oil yearly as I only cover around 1500 miles in that time. I find the bike uses about half to 3/4 a litre of oil so I don't need to top it up atall (it's only done 10,000 miles). However, I think by putting in 3 litres you are not adding enough oil. From memory the engine casing has stamped in it 3.4L I think (I can check this if you want) and the Haynes manual says either 3.2 or 3.4 litres if you are also changing the oil filter so 3.0 litres is slightly underfilling it.

Depends if you're changing the filter as well or not...
