Basically couple of questions

My coolant needs topping up on me cbr. And its 50/50 anti freeze distilled water.

Now heres the questions

1. Will normal boiled/filtered water be oki or do i have to use distilled water

2. Will anti freeze for a car be fine

One more question, does anyone not sell any pre miexed stuff in a bottle?

If so who and where from ?

Yep i agree with woo on this one, buy the stuff from bike shops, will last you a while and its fairly cheap.

Only trouble i had was its in tricky place to fill up.

Shell do some for £5.95 is that the stuff i want? Or my mates bought some from Halfords which were £2 which is pre mixed shit.

Last time i just used Distilled water from a chemist and Anti freeze used in our Wagons at work.

5.95 sounds about right. I got mine from local bike shop though it should all be the same stuff.

Just bog standard coolant you want, halfords will be best bet if your not sure as they will have an idea of whats what, whereas petrol station attendants have trouble turning the pumps on, let alone helping with products they sell.

I bought shell advance coolant. was a little expensive to say the least. On the topic of coolant how do you do change? Do you just drain the system, fill the rad, then the res, run the bike, check res level and let any hot air out the rad..

Just want to check before I do mine as I topped up with evan drinking water since it was the only thing available to me at the time..

Not sure to be honest as i just topped mine up rather than drain the whole system.

I'd use pre mixed bike coolant.

The reason is, car coolant has stuff in it for steel engines, and most bike engines have aluminium parts.

This may have changed for cars nowadays, but bike radiators also have smaller and narrower channels than car radiators. The bike coolant that I've used recently is a bit thinner than car coolant.

In the user manuals of most of the bikes I've owned it said not to use distilled water, just use pre mixed coolant. That may be a cynical marketing ploy, or it might be again to do with having an aluminium engine rather than steel.

I have to use special coolant in my MR2 as it is an ally engine, the workshop manual specifically states not to use distilled water and anti freeze for this reason.

To be honest, I so seldom fill up with coolant, and its so cheap that its not worth taking the risk to disobey the owners manual IMO.

Saying that, I currently own only one liquid cooled motorcycle... Smile

Some of the newer anti-freez don't mix well so be carefull what you put in. I NEVER buy the pre mixed stuff! Why do people pay for water? I juts put tap water in and anti-freeze, distilled is for batteries, the new anti-feeze has rust inhibitors in them anyway. Wink

Glycol has no anti-corrosion properties.

If I get bored I’ll have a look at my coolant and see what inhibitors it contains.

If you’re from a hardwater area go for pre-mixed or use distilled water. If you’re from up north and have soft-water just go for mains water.

Might try some reverse osmosis water in mine….

Oh, and where the hell does this boiled water thing come from?!

If you boil the water first, then in theory all the calcium carbonate comes out of solution and sticks to your kettle and so not to the inside of your radiator. You'd need to boil the hell out of it though and distilled water (having turned to steam and condensed) meets this criteria.

Filtering the water is not good enough.

Frankly, it's yet another reason you're better of living oop north.

Special "bike" or pre-diluted coolant = rip-off.

So what would be the better.

As i live up north, should i buy the expensive pre mix, or just do what i did last year, boiled water and anti freeze and top it up?
