Ok. Another noob what bike question.

I currently run a hornet.

I am gonna be buying a new/newish bike in a month or so, for ~ £6000

I don't want to lose my licence, and where I'm moving, I'm even more likely to.

I have been toying with the idea of a supermoto, and got a test ride on a KTM 640 LC4 yesterday, which I quite enjoyed....
Decent pull up to 80 and then not much else...
(Which is ideal)
(Plus I could use it for easy off-road stuff)

I wasn't keen on his gearing tho, and the less forgiving nature of downchanges and not getting the revs right.
It also wanted to lift the front wheel on every gearchange...which with my limited experience is a bit scary.

So I am wondering wether to try a twin, either a v-twin such as a Monster, or RSV, or whatever, or a slightly more sensible BMW boxer 800.

What are your thoughts. (I have been reading the v-twin v IL4 thread with interest too)
Are there any other "sort of" sensible options...

You need to decide what type of bike you would like, a trials bike, naked or a sports bike. The KTM will only try to wheelie if wou are giving it some beans and you won't be doing that all the time. If you like a bit of off road action they will handle it easily.

Just test ride the others you like the look of, but I wouldn't go with the BMW850 as they are under powered for their size. The 1150 would be a better bet and they have cheap insurance.

My dillema is keeping my licence living in sweden.

IL4 hornet is nice. Loads of pull past 100 mph.
Loads of fun 8000 rpm+
hard not to speed.

Swedish police a bit eager

Wondered what is the easiest bike to NOT speed on, but has decent poke...
(And although I can admire the chrome, and the time taken to polish it, I hate cruisers, so that's off the menu)

Single is looking good, but wondered about the alternatives...
(The only twin I have ridden is an ER5(on DAS) and that to be honest felt pretty lifeless.)

Africa twin perhaps?

Perhaps you should look at a compromise between a supermoto and a road bike, a trailee sounds ideal for you. The singles run out of puff, yeah. If you reckon a single will suffice - have you at all thought about the BMW scarver? a very very well rated road bike and very sensible speeds to the tonne - amazing MPG.

If you want to remain IL4 perhaps a Triumpth Speed 4? or if you have £6K the new naked IL3 Speed 3 will have the 675 engine in it and gets high bars, will handle fab with renthals.

Twins under 800cc can be a bit crappy top end and lose puff slightly less than a 650cc single but nowt to scream about. If anything a twin under 100cc is going to be less snatchy and wont shake you to bits as much as a single.

Bear in mind you dont want to end up not having the power when you can use it and the roads are clear.

Get a gixxer and turn into ghostrider #2. Razz

A XT660 would be something worth thinking about. Cheaper than a KTM, heavier so I don't think it's as wheelie prone (doesnt mean it wont try), looks good and plenty of power up until 100.

With less than 5 months riding experience that might be a problem... Smile

It's on the radar, but seems quite a lot less power to weight than the KTM, and I quite like the quirky looks of the KTM... Smile

Noooo lol not got one of those to sell (yet!). It's a Triumph Tiger.

HERE is the official Triumph bumph on it.

Supposed to be one of the best all-round bikes you can get apparently.

heh looks fun, but...
tickover 3000 rpm
7.8 litre tank
60 mile range
60 hour service interval
30 day parts only warranty (The 33 bhp version has full 2-year)

Sounds like one to "have a go of" rather than buy Smile

(There's a review in March's Bike mag)

Ah right... Yep The Tiger was one I was thinking of...Nice bike. But I have abot £6000 to spend and sort of fancied new or nearly new. And I would probably go for a BMW 1200 GS over the Tiger just for reliability reasons Smile

*Edit
Looking at £7700 for a new one over there. Or just under £6000 for a 2 yr old.

Second hand but nearly new 1150GS, a bit more reliable at present than the 1200 as some are having problems with batteries at the moment.
