I have a switch thing on my bike and ah dinnae ken when to use it. It is to open or close the fuel line. The manual says it is for when the engine is idle. Am I supposed to close the valve everytime I turn the bike off, or just if I am not to be riding for a while. The bike is a Cagiva Planet.

ta!

My Dad always told me that you should turn it off every time you turn the engine off (within reason- popping to the shops is ok). I think its especially important with 2 strokes cos petrol leaks in which leads to engine wear.

Plus it will stop the engine flooding if some tit comes along and twists the throttle while making vroom vroom noises- particularly a threat outside college'sVery Happy

I've got a Planet as well- have you derestricted it? if so how, did you fit a new rear sprocket or just take the exhaust restrictor out? have you rejetted?

Hi

Turning the petrol off stops the engine flooding if the needle valve is worn or held open with a little bit of dirt. Doesnt happen often, but a real pain when it does (happened on the 1200 Bandit a few months back, and cost me 3 gallons of petrol).

Opening and closing the throttle with the engine turned off wont flood the engine (except on vehicles with accelerator pump carbs, which are quite rare on bikes)

All thebest

Keith

Ah another planet owner! Aren't they damn sexy? I just got mine last week. Mine is still restricted (L Plates) but seeing as the quoted bhp is about 12 does that mean you can somehow derestrict it so it is still below 33bhp?

Yeah you can, theres a restrictor in the exhaust which is the main one. After that I was told that you should put a smaller rear sprocket on (standard is 43 teeth and the smallest you can fit is 39) to get a higher top speed, but this is at the expense of acceleration. I think you then have to rejet as well.

I can't decide what to do, cos with the standard sprocket the 0-60 should be REALLY fast (for a 125) cos its lower geared than the mito its based on. The top speed will then be around 85mph. If you fit a smaller sprocket then the top will be 100, but with slower acceleration. Depends what you want from it.
But this bloke who told me about it said his still gets to 60 in 6.5 secs even with a smaller sprocket. He's done other mods though, as you can see below:

Would removing the exhaust restriction affect top speed. It'd rather have good acceleration than a 100mph top speed.

ive heard a lot about the planet being really dodgy,

bike said the sidestand is dodge, so it falls over really easily, and other mags have said the finish is crap as well so it corrodes quick

these things plus the fact its italian, and its a cagiva, and the short servive intervals are puttin me off,

you got anything to say about all that?

The guest here is probably better qualified to talk about finish cos mine is a bit scruffy cos it was damage repairable. Its not really really bad- but it doesn't shout 'quality' like some bikes do. The side stand is wierd, cos it feels like theres not alot of weight being put on it but mine's done 6k miles and it hasn't got any damage on the right hand side that would have come from falling over.

I don't think it has a massive effect on top speed but I'm not really sure. It would definately improve acceleration though- I was told that its around 11 secs to 60 with the restrictor in and 6.5 without (and thats with a smaller sprocket so its probably even faster with standard sprocket).

Mine is T reg and the finish seems to be fine. There is not really mcuh significant corrosion. My bike has done 9K and hasn't fallen over because of the side stand as far as I know. To be honest I know nothing about bikes, but as soon as I saw it I had to have it coz it looks very sexy. Chrome... Shocked It is also cheaper to insure than all those race replicas.

Yeah cos a small accident will do very little damage when a race rep might be nearly written off cos all the plastics are damaged. I like the looks as well but mainly got it cos it was a good deal- on looks alone I would have went for the mito (preferably in yellow).
You should have a look on biketrader 'guest' cos they've got a small review of the Planet. They seem to like it alot- which is always good to read.
