ok is it just me or this because its sooo cold.. When ever im going around aroundabout or corner i feel my back wheel slightly sliding. it does not seem to grip the road properly and it has plenty of tread left in it?

also at standstill it slightly slides if i accelerate hard.. ?

At fast speeds its fine..

is this normal?

oh and as we are expecting snow tomorrow who is planning on driving to work? Im very tempted (and believe me i would rather ride in) but this sliding thing worries me and its not even snowed yet!

The sliding is completely normal this time of year, accelerating hard in this weather your back wheel will snake a bit and its best to take corners as slow and upright as possible. I quite often feel my back wheel slide and slip a bit at the moment.

Take it easy this time of year Thumbs Up

I noticed more rear wheel sliding yesterday and today as well. Must be the colder weather -- I had adapted my riding style to the 5-10 degrees we were having before. Last night at 9 it was quite cold, below zero, and at some point I actually thought I had a slow puncture in the tire.

As you seem to be having reoccuring problems with the back end i suspect it is just lack of confidence and experience or very crap tyres.

It's a powerful bike but it's not that powerful. Even over the past few days of cold weather i've had no trouble whacking the throttle open while banked over pretty far.

It does depend entirely on the road though, you can be on a perfectly dry bit of road, then you come across a bit of road that is surrounded by bushes, the sun hasn't hit it yet, and so it is still icey, which can send you off.

I've had more issues with my front tyre squirming a bit on roundabouts, but then I'm only on a 125 so you know,

Sorry but that’s complete bullshi*.

Can we not over exaggerate on the power please, everyone’s bike is different so don’t say things like, I go round corners in the cold and damp and whack it open…….
We’re trying to keep the spills down, trying to alert riders as to why this is going on, if they didn’t know already.

You might have spent £110 a tyre, they are expensive because in the heat, say anything above 7 degrees your tyres are good to go some after about ten minutes ride. But in the cold damp, greasing conditions we’re facing now, they are useless.
So just watch what you say, some riders could take it to heart and think they are being pussies on the road.

It’s not a bloody race this time of year, take your time, save the hurt and the cash.

Remember it depends how much you're tires have warmed up too..

I can leave work and spin up the rear no trouble with a handful of gas. Get a few miles down the road (bare in mind I either go via motorway or fast A-road) and my tires are begining to warm up and grip much better.

Just take it as it comes, it's a lot like riding in actual snow, but with a lil more forgiveness- Just be as smooth as you can.

Even given the conditions last night (round midnight), I was able to beat a new Subaru Impreza without much trouble. Just having the confidence in yourself and your machine helps take it a long way. If you're at all worried you'll panic when something starts to go slightly wrong. You need to take it all in your ride! (see what I did there? Wink)

So Shaba, as you can see, take your chances riding like you would normally and surprise yourself on the odd occasion.

Or take it easy and save the showing off for the summer.

Rossi doesn't race in the snow, there's a reason for it.

Have fun

Yep, his sponsors have seen him in a rally car crashing and wouldn't risk him touching their bike. Wink

Tbh i think they are. Imo i'm not a particularly skilled rider but i don't think i'm coming off when the back end skips around a bit over a bit of bumpy/slippy road. Don't ride beyond your means but if you own a bike with a bit of power it's going to happen every so often and untill you get used to it it often feels a lot worse that it actually is.

I don't masage peoples ego's, i tell it like it is. And in this case (iirc shaba hasn't been riding long) it sounds like someone who bought a bike that's a bit too much a bit too soon.

I saw I took no more chances last night, than I do doing similar in the summer. At least given the time of year I'm much more aware of the conditions and that something could easily go wrong. Rather than a lot of riders in the summer who have the idea that when the sun's out you'll stick to the road like glue.
What's more dangerous, knowing full well the conditions are bad and being prepared for it, or thinking everything's hunky-doory and just giving it everything.

I was just saying, the ability to ride quick and lay down the power is there. Ok, maybe next time the front will give way or whatever. But the same could easily happen in the summer, just in summer speeds may be a lil faster...

Out of interest, what tyres do you have on at the moment (make and model)?

My Bt-020's on the ZZR-600 seemed to handle the -6 deg. road surfaces yesterday without too many problems. I was taking it easy and only felt one twitch when I went over some recently re-painted white lines.

Was sat at some roadworks for a few minutes though, all the while thinking "My tires are getting cold...." Sad

Talking of white lines, they were the cause of me dropping my GSXR600 which I had all of 5 days. So here's my tip of the day for turning right at junctions in frosty/slippery weather.

Give yourself more time at the junction and turn right but dont cross the white line until you are going straight. i.e. turn into the oncoming lane, near to the middle line, and then cross the line when you are upright.

yeah, when i was turning right out of a side road onto a main road recently, i also had the back wheel slip on the white line and the bike go out.

Because I was on a 250 4t dirt bike, it was easy to catch though. Didnt even need to put my foot down.

White lines ! dont do it !

It's winter.

It's cold.

Cold road and air stops your tyres heating properly.

Therefore you dont have as much grip.

All the shite on the roads dont help either.

They're just more experienced and have a better idea on how much grip they have. Once you start riding beyond your own limits, all is lost.

Take it easy Thumbs Up

Either that or they haven't got much experince and seem to think they're doing well, which looks like they have an idea.
There really is no point trying to make as much progress now as you would in dry conditions.
Two tyres cover a very small surface area, if one guy goes around a corner fine, and lower than you, it doesn't mean you're going to be traveling along the same line.
All it takes is one patch, you minimise the possiblity by riding uprighted more.
