Has anyone done this?

I've had long hair for a few years now, and I'm gettin' bored with it, so I keep thinking of cutting it short and spiky, but I also have this mad urge to dye it white; like bright white, not borderline yellow that people classify as white.
How white can you dye your hair? Can you get it really bright white?

My brothers mate dyed his hair white once.

Well, I say he dyed it, was actually more a case of someone daring him to soak his head in a bowl of domestos.

He had quite a sore scalp for a while... Rolling Eyes

Hmmm, the amount of bleach you would need to strip your hair of colour would strip your hair of any natural oils and your scalp of most of it's skin too... Confused

I guess you'd do it by leaving bleach on for a very long time (more than the recommended max of 20 minutes) or bleaching it twice.

The finished colour would depend a lot on your natural hair colour. If you really want to do it I cannot stress enough that you should at least consult a hairdresser - thing could get rather messy otherwise!

Also, I agree with Annabella in that your hair and scalp would get damaged to quite an extent by doing this; your hair would be very straw-like and brittle.

Rather than white, there are plenty of mad colours out there if you're feeling bored - like Directions, which are only semi permanent. Why not try those instead?

I was planning on going to a hairdresser. I thought if I dyed it, the white is just a colour in it's self?
I didn't want to bleach it, as that always seems to be that yellowey/whitey look I don't like.

I've been considering pink bits Laughing But white?! Confused

Might even be more extreme than what Annabella said and you might lose some hair? A friend of mine started losing hair after colouring too much.

At the age of 27 myself I'm going grey slowly and to be honest rather than having half and half by the age of 30odd I would rather be pure, shocking white!
A bit like Philip Schofield, (although he's not my idol or anything.) i'm sure he dyes his hair that colour to sort of enhance his trademark.
The only results I've seen from mates using peroxide on thier hair are varying degrees of yellow and sore scalps.

You'll need some kind of industrial brick cleaning acid to acheive a satisfactory result. Thumbs Up

Hairdresser is probably a good plan. Although many of them will probably turn you away (depends on the current state of your hair etc). As far as I know there is no permanent white hair dye so you would be looking at intense bleaching to attain the colour. I had something similar done a while ago where I needed many other dye colours stripping out first and it took two sessions of several bleach applications each. It isn't the most comfortable of procedures (had a few silent tears running down my face once or twice) and the upkeep is intense but I will say that if I had the money I'd be extremely tempted to do it again Smile

No, white isn't a colour you can 'dye' your hair. You have to strip it of it's natural colour to reach white.

For people with naturally dark hair, often they have to bleach their hair back to a lighter shade in order for colours to take - this can take several applications of bleach (hydrogen peroxide).

If you check out the colours section in somewhere like boots you will notice that a vast majority of dyes say they will only be sucessful on light brown/blonde hair with little effect on darker hair colours.

They do recommend that hair is professionally 'pre-lightened', the toner alone won't work.

i have had almost white hair for years apart from my black with bright blue or red highlights or other weird combos when ive got bored.

dependent on natural colour i am light brown, i use russell gerome high life powder bleach and 40% vol peroxide, by russell gerome too.

30-45 mins max and i use be blonde shampoo and conditioner for platinum blonde.

my hair is actually lighter than the photo portray and no yellow,
for added effects boots doa good range of coloured hair wax, i sometimes use the plain white one that reacts with uv lights when im out, so my hair starts to have that mega uv glow

oh i am stoned on the verge of whiting so excuse the glazed expression Sick

I used to have pure white bleached hair. My natural colour is quite dark brown (well, greying now but back then it was brown!)

It used to take a good 2 or 3 bleaches of about 30mins each to get it pure white not yellow. The first time I had it done, a couple of days later my scalp was coming off in big lumps and as itchy as hell! Got over it in about a week though!

It's an odd feeling getting it done. Doesn't really hurt but feels really cold like those creams/gels you get that make your skin go cold! Then it sort of starts to itch but dont scratch it as it will make the burning worse afterwards!

Subsequent bleachings arent so bad, it doesn't hurt then but you need to do it about once every 2 weeks to keep it white as the damn roots grow through really quickly. It's best to use a blue shampoo when you wash it also to keep it really white and stop it going yellow!

Go for it, it's a great look! Thumbs Up
