Best way to clean air filter?

Hi today i have decided to strip down the carb and clean everything out as my bike hasnt been going the best recently. What way is the most efficient way of cleaning your air filter and is it ok to spray wd40 in your carb to clean it. Any replies appreciated.

Unless its an aftermarket filter you would be better off fitting a new one. The original type aren't really made to be cleaned and refitted. If you REALLY want to do it then use a vaccum cleaner on the outer face. Don't use any liquids, it'll just make it worse. Wouldn't suggest spraying WD into the carb, a bit of redex in the fuel will work fine.

Redex in your fuel or WD40 sprayed into the carb wont touch the air filter.

What type of filter is it?

Paper, Foam Fabric...etc?

I think one of us hasn't read it properly, I thought he wanted to spray WD40 into the carb to clean the CARB?

If it's a foam type then often these are impregnated with oil. The normal way to clean these is in white spirit, allow to dry then re-oil filter afterwards.

Paper ones shouldn't be cleaned other than a hoover out as previously mentioned . Don't get them wet or else it will be ruined and require replacement

Hey, Sorry if i confused anyone but i was in a hurry to clean the air filter and carb and wasn't really concentrating. I meant, Is it ok to spray WD40 in your carb to clean the CARB and what is the best way to clean a AIR FILTER. Cheers for all the help.

I found chucking my cruddy filter in a bucket of water was enough to get rid of most of the visible rubbish, although you can buy stuff that's specifically designed for cleaning filters or alternatively use petrol if you've got some lying around . Just make sure you re-apply filter oil afterwards.

fine for foam filters, not so good for paper. Which do you have Speed_Freak1711?

If you do use petrol make sure that you clean it all off, you wouldn't want a misfire to start a fire.

clean the carb by taking it off the bike to a clear work bench, then strip all the floats,jets fuel filter ect, give them a good blast out with an airline to clean them, replace every thing were it came from, return to bike, fit carb, put bike back in one pice, start her up after fiting the carb and leaving the bike 5 mins to give the carbs chance to fill up with petrol. And away you go.
