Which GSXR1100?

I may be looking for another bike shortly and fancy a GSXR1100.

I've heard a lot of people rate the oil cooled motors over the newer watercooled ones but dont know why.

I'd be looking at a 91 or later and want to know whether there where any particularly good or bad models.

Anyone shed any light or have any recomendations?

Think the main issue is that the water cooled engines are not as tuneable as the older old cooled ones. The water cooled ones are more compact, and the shimmed valve adjustment setup on them doesn't appreciate high revs.

The watercooled bikes are more powerful, but some feel lack the midrange grunt and character of the old oil pumpers. Personally i would choose the best L/M/N model I could lay my hands on (90 - 92). These are the last three years of the oil cooled models. They are very very grunty and known for being able to set up to handle quite well, or like a 160mph pig in knickers. The flip side is that you might find a watercooled bike that is better value for money because of age and the kudos that the oil pumpers have, just choose something relativly standard without too many signs of homebrew fettling.
