hi, having a right nightmare with the bike lately, have tried everything i can think of to fix it but still no joy. was just wondering if there were any nsr owners near chesterfield who would be so kind as to interchange a few simple parts like exhaust, carb and airbox to see if i can find a fault. i could come to you or meet somewhere between(dont mind which). i think this would be the easiest way to find my problem and would happily sort you out with a bit of cash for the trouble, any help greatly appreciated!

its running crap from 3000 to 6000 rpm, spits and struggles to get above 7000 and occasionally runs crap in the powerband especialy after 10000 rpm, have posted on it several times already but to no avail, just thought it would save a lot more time and unenjoyable riding to just change a few bits with someone to determine the fault,

i has been cleaned and oiled twice in the last few months, the bike has only done 7000 miles so the airbox is in good condition, saying that the previous owner had messed about with it a bit by drilling holes where the spout thing comes inside the box but it was sealed again (i presume by the same person) and it ran fine with it like that before, i have checked it is all still sealed as it should be and even tried taking the screws out the lid and opening it slightly as i rev but it still revs the same(with the boggyness)so i ruled out the airbox as a fault

does it do this all the time or only in cold weather conditions?.

is it ok when the bike has been ridden for a few miles?.

If you ruled out the airfilter, then id check the carb.. Sounds like it could be running to rich... Rule it out anyway..

spark plug ok, powervalves ok, does it in all weathers but appears to do it more after a few days of rain or if its been washed, the boggyness is not there below 3000rpm you can hear a change in engine note at 4000 and again at 5 to 5.500 and again at 7000, throttle response is only crap in the midrange.

Is the original plug cap on it? Alot of them come wit bad caps that are made to block out interferences and the likes, it would be worth trying a different one if it is standard.. Get an ngk or something...

i cannot take off my mind that your problem is a valves problem
i suggest you do my usual test :
- warm well your bike (at least 15mn , needle out of the blue zone)
- unplug your servo-motor o, open valves at maximum
- have a ride and see if the problem is still there
note : it could be a bit scrapy to reach 7000 rpm due to the valves fully open

right i may be getting somewhere now. tried alains test with powervalve open and there was no improvement but then tried it with them closed and the flat spots had been noticeably improved but with an obdvious lack of power aswell, there was none of the usual spluttering and revved ok through 3 to 7000 but with throttle pinned it bogged down a bit occasionally, could this mean powervalve, exhaust problem?

no it means that your valves timming is not working properply . i will explain : a low rpm the torque is low because you reach it around 7000 rpm , with the valves closed the torque is very much improved between 2000 and 7000 , this is the range where you need it to move your 400 pounds weight . and at 7000 you need to open them to reach a higher RPM . so could be several problems causing your bugs but essentially in valves working :
- valves stocked by carbon
- valves shaft stiff (carbon) or damaged (fluting)
- cables stiff or blocked (WD40 will do , spray them and manually move them)
- servo-motor or control unit faulty
- CDI faulty or loose contact on the white/red which transmitt to the control the info about RPM
working on that , prior thinking on electronic fault , eliminate all mechanical possibilities and the 1rst thing i will do : exhaust pipe off , put my fingers in the exhaust port and see how works my flaps
use long pliers to move the pulley and making the valves working

just been to the shops with servo connected again and also i lifted the needle in the carb up to third notch just for curiositys sake and it works perfectly! the only thing is it sometimes does fix itself and then have a relapse from time to time i could have something to do with me turning the rc pulley by hand a few times but i dont know . will have to wait till next time it goes crap again to diagnose further. thanks alot for the help anyway guys, im sure i will be back in the not too distant future with more questions, much appreciated

well that lasted about ooh 5 minutes(told you i would be back) and now its back to crap again, but i suppose on the bright side it does have potential to work if it wants to, now to just figure out what made it work.

as alains diagnosed it is the powervalve, well done alains Wink i have narrowed it down to the servo side of it as it only moves a litttle bit in each direction as i can turn it twice as far in either direction by hand, and when i do so it cures the problem. as for why it does this i dont know, it must have worked right before and explains why when it rains or i wash it it breaks. it is a tv78 control unit and had the shunt in the picture attached when i got the bike but removed it straight away, could there be some other kind of restriction or maybe just a loose connection somewhere?

maybe your bike is a swiss import ! give me your serial number (between the yokes) probably ZDCJC22E01Fxxxxxx . it will be usefull if you can have clear pictures of servo loom , TV78 unit , position of shunt . i told you about the white/red wire coming from the cdi and going to the TV-78 (with the black and green on the 3 wires connector) , if this one is shunt the servo is not able to move the valves because it doesnot know the engine speed . i'll give you by pm my mail adress , so you will be able to give me any details on pictures
