Hi, the starter motor on my rs125 has been noisy for a while, now its stopped working completely. I can hear the relay working when the start button is pushed, and ive wired the starter directly to a battery and nothing happens. Ive taken the starter motor apart and it was full of dirty black liquid Neutral which is why im guessing its knackered... question is, can they be re-conditioned? if so, is it worth the cost or is it better to buy a new one?
another question is can someone explain what the 'bendix' is please?
cheers, nick

The bendix drive is the small cog that conects with the main (large) cog on the flywheel. As it spins it gets pulled towards the flywheel. When it gets sticky the starting process gets noisey.

Wouldn't think so. Just make the engagement more clunky, or not engage at all.

Check the condition of the motor brushes.

i took the starter motor apart and they were filthy - all the internals were covered in a dirty black liquid, like dirty water. no idea why though. i cleaned it up as best as i could and wired it up to a battery but it was still dead...

The motor spinning operates the bendix, so don't worry about that just yet Smile

Shouldn't be any liquid in the motor. There's always a lot of very fine graphite powder inside a motor from the carbon brushes wearing, so if that's mixed with some water or oil (that shouldn't be in there) that would probably explain the dirty look of it.

The carbon brushes and the ring they run on is the secret to getting the motor running again - did you see what kind of state they were in?

And, as ever, make sure your battery is charged.

finpos.

i wrote a doc about NSR's , it's a part showing how to repair a starter . all italian 2 strokes have about the same starter . have a look on this file . in 99% of cases a good cleaning of comutator , change of brushes & spring give you a new starter
