What ever happened to the 3 or was it 6 stroke engine? I remember reading about this invention which sort of had the power of a two stroke engine and low weight since it did not require a radiator and the assorted gubbins that goes with such a thing (coolant pump , hoses etc) , but required you to carry around 50% of the volume of petrol with you of water , so if you filled up with 20 litres you needed 10 litres of water.

10 litres of water = weight being 10 kilos , but then again I'm pretty sure me coolong system the radiator / fan / pipes / coolant bottle/expansion chamber , would weigh more than 10 kilos and require more maintenance than a 2 stroke engine with a water tank instead of a 2 stoke
oil tank.

Also that performace would improve as you ran out of petrol , since you lose more weight
over time.

I'm not sure but i think it was a diesel of some sort?

AFAIK it was the normal 4 strokes and then two for in/out of the coolant (so a 6stronke) cooling exactly where its needed.

I think it was more intended for lorrys and the like really, interesting idea though Thumbs Up

sounds ace.. its funny how the basic idea of four stroke engine hasn’t changed much to make it better and more effective yet there as been vast improvements in other areas... I smell conspiracys !!!!

when you think about it im surprised something like this hasn’t been done already

Oh? And what about overhead cams, electronic fuel injection and fly-by-wire throttle just to name a few? Today's engines are significantly cleaner, more efficient and more powerful than those of yesteryear. Can't help but love them 2-strokes though. Thumbs Up

They have nothing to do with 4 stroke engines as they can in theory be applied to 2 stroke engines.

Yes Jon, they can be applied to 2 strokes but they in widespread use in 4 strokes and have greatly improved the breed. Or how about variable valve timing? Desmo/pneumatic valves? Then there are even more advancements that can be applied to any internal combustion engine such as massivly improved construction methods and materials, variable intakes, highly intelligent engine management systems, traction control, exhaust technologies etc. etc. etc.

The modern engine is so much better and more complex than those of even 30 years. To say that the modern engine 'hasn't changed much to make it better and more effective' is just an idiotically simplistic viewpoint.

i mean im surprised that its stuck which the four stroke combustion method (if you know what i mean). instead of modifying it to make it more effect like the 6stroke engine

hope that clears things up
