A while ago, I picked up a pc that had been left by bins as rubbish.

Thanks to kickstart, i have got it all working as he told me what i needed to connect my keyboard to it.

Im thinking of 3 things id like to do with it.

1) be able to connect it to my newer pc, with a short network cable for the purpose of transferring files, and backing up data so i can reinstall windows on my newer pc.

2) have some kind of set up so that both pcs are in the same room, and can both access the internet through my cable modem. I have the idea that the cable modem is set up with the ip of my newer pc, and might need its settings adjusting to use with a router, but im not sure about this.

3) a wireless router set up, so the old pc can be in another room, and be able to access a) the internet, and b) files on the xp pc

id also like to know, if a wireless router set up would be much slower than a wired in network for accessing the internet

I dont know how to do any of these things, so pls help tell me how to do it

options 1 and 2 can be easily done using 2 cheap lan cards for about 5 quid each and a Lan cable of appropriate length.

the sharing of the internet is done in windows by enabling ICS (internet connection sharing)

very easy to do

so can i use the network connection that my cable modem uses along with a network card for the old pc, and a cable ?

or do i need a pair of network cards ?

what type of network cable do i need, as i think there are two types, but cant remember what they are called

How would I enable ICS ?

i have found this,

https://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp#1

so that gives me an idea

It won't be any slower. The wireless is not the slowest point in the chain that consists of your internet connect; the connection itself is. Your wireless is likely to be 11 or 54Mbps and I very much doubt your internet connection is faster than that...

Don't forget that the utp cable needs to be a crossover cable in this setup.
