how about the RAC Route Planner? It'll occasionally take you to Hollyhead via Holland and the suggested journey times a bit too optimistic, but apart from that it's alright.

AA have the best routing, but I much prefer Google's maps.
I tend to make my own route, ensuring I take a zoomed out map of the route (or part of the route I don't know) and a street level map of the area around my destination - so I can pull in to a side street and see exactly where I am.
