Im off to look at a 1997 Ducati 748 Bip. tonight.

Obviously service history is a must, but someone told me to check when the belts were last done.

Would someone mind filling me in on what these are and what to check please.

Also, anything else I should be looking at ?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Regulator will explode if you look at it funny. Rest of electrics actually ok! Parts officially "not cheap". Lots of labour involved in changing the (cam) belts, thus the advice. You can't see 'em, but you can look at the service record to see when they were done (if ever). Most of these bikes have been sat in rich folks garages for years without turning a wheel, so common advice is to change the belts anyway (4 to 500 notes?).

Very uncomfortable - test ride a must.

Belt change should cost no where near that, and is usually quite a straight forward job.

It's advised to check them as they have a habbit of perishing and breaking. Early models also had crap ones fitted, later one's had uprated one's which then became standard. A broken cam-belt is bad news.

A full service is indeed very expensive due to the time involved. Ducati specify quite an extensive job-list for each service which is where the cost comes in, plus the parts are quite expensive.

Despite the various horror stories and additional expense, I'd buy one.

I bought two belts today for the 996 and they are the same for the748.
They will cost you about 65 pound.I got them trade and am going to do
them myself so the price is good for me.

Relatively easy to do..?

Is there a guide on the internet on how to do it? Would be interested to know. Smile

sure it is right. So long as i have the right tools it will be fine.
I will take photos and post them with any info needed.

Would be grateful if you did.

Particularly if any special tools are needed. Smile

Good luck with that. If you knew what you were doing, had all the right tools to hand and the engine was on a bench, maybe Smile

No special tools needed, but some of the fasteners are a bear to get into, so don't try it with just a blunt screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. There's a tool to get the belt tension right, but there's a couple of work-arounds for not having it (see: the internet Smile )

Did one a few month ago for a mate for the price of some beer. Took me all day.

The 748 riders I know ride their bikes most days, rain or shine, and not all of them are even well-off, let alone rich. More and more people are realising that a Ducati is for life, not just for sunny Sundays. Very Happy

Paivi - My theory is that Ducatis have two lives. They get purchased new and accessorised, then sit unloved in the back of a garage for a few years before finally getting sold to someone who actually enjoys riding a bike.

Just an update........

Decided not to go look at the 748. Was reading up on the internet and a hell of a lot can go wrong on them. I dont think I could afford the servicing costs all the time . Shame really, as its my dream bike Sad

Never mind...........Im looking for a mid-90's Fireblade instead (second choice) Twisted Evil
