Laptops are pretty cheap these days, 400 quid will get you a decent 1.6-2ghz laptop with at least a gig of ram, add the graphics yourself, it should be cheaper.

Processors tend to be measured in lower ghz than desktops but because of the architecture run as fast, look for celeron m at the low end and dual core for really fast performance.

One thing to keep in mind with laptops is that they aren't designed to be on for hours at a time: they get very hot, and sometimes will shut down on their own if the processor gets too hot.

For gaming, desktops are usually a better choice. You can get better hardware for cheaper, it's more upgradeable, and you wont have to play your games squinting at a tiny laptop screen, you could get a bigger monitor togo with it.

Get a laptop if you've got to move it around a lot, since they are infinitely more portable. But if all you'll be using it for is games at home on the desk, why not just a desktop?

Cheers guys
I have always liked the Alien stuff.
Yea I would like to keep the desk top. But I need to save space in my room as I have the little one with me.
Always touching it - on, off,on,off you know.
Plus a lap top, small corner desk would be ideal.

Odd, mine are usually on most of the time.

Wink my kids are the reason my comp at home was put into a server case that has a lockable door over the power button.

But yeah, laptops take up a LOT less space. You can get laptops that are as fast as desktops. They just cost a little more for comparable specs. Plus maybe it's just my personal preference, since with a desktop, I can buy the components and put it together myself. Smile

That being said, there are some sexy-ass laptops out there.

Sorry if this is happening to your laptop something is wrong with it.

Think mine's got a current uptime of a month :/

My girlfriend has just bought a Toshiba A103 from Curry's for ~£650 mark.

Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 15.4" Gloss screen.

Is an awesome machine and the price is good. I wouldn't usually advocate buying from shops like that but as long as you stick to the quality brands they can drop their prices more than the little guy on the high street can Smile

I'll second the Dell XPS M1710. Runs everything pretty decently.

2.0 GHz Centrino duo
Geforce 7900GS
1 GB

And the best laptop screen around IMO (1920x1200 resolution)

Its cheaper than the Alienware (who are owned by Dell also)

Why do these threads always turn into a willing-waving, "look what I bought" competition? Laughing

The answer is easy, although it will appear unhelpful at first: you want a laptop with the higher number of everything (fastest processor, most RAM etc). Whether you can afford that or not is the question.

Alienware were unquestionably the best for games. Whether that's changed with their acquisition by Dell or not, I don't know.

Okay then, real advice (without knowing budgets):
Arrow A Core 2 Duo processor (or Turion) of 2.0GHz or upwards
Arrow 1GB RAM
Arrow 256MB dedicated ATI Radeon or Nvidia graphics card (NOT shared memory)
Arrow Decent resolution TFT, although a lot will depend on the size of the screen you want (obviously)
Arrow 7200rpm hard drive would be an advantage (although most laptops are 5400)

Laptops (generally) do not run as fast as desktops (as has been stated here). You're talking about taking architecture, shrinking it and stuffing it into a tiny case. Heat output is a major consideration - those high end desktop graphics cards have huge heat sinks and fans on them for a reason - you cannot put those into laptops. The other biggie is battery life - no-one's going to sell a laptop that runs like the dog's danglies but has a battery life of 30 minutes. A laptop is a compromise and should be treated as such.

If you're planning on keeping the laptop for some time I'd highly recommend looking for at least 2 gig of RAM. Truth is that games are advancing at a spectacular rate and you're going to have to spend some big bucks to keep your machine up with the pace (Look at Crysis for an example of things to come this year).

A gig of RAM is the bare minimum for most games coming out nowadays - and anyone that plays games will tell you that the bare minimum requirements suck serious ass.

Can't stress this enough. Memory is the big problem for laptop gaming. The laptops I looked at seemed to be aimed mostly at home office or business users, for which 512Mb of memory which is shared with the graphics would usually be sufficient. The Acer laptop I bought from ebuyer was one of the few that had separate memory for graphics, and is still damn slow at loading the cities in WoW.

as long as u have c2d with 1gb of ram its ok

a good GC is also recommended dont be fooled by the amount of ram on the GC, as the benchmark tests for some 128mb graphics cards are known to be better then 256mb ram ones.

so dont just buy a graphics card just cos it states 256, you need to look at the other factors

I'm really happy with my Dell Inspiron 6400 and have also bought two Inspiron 1300s for basic everyday use, both birthday presents. I can't comment on Dell's new line-up with Vista though.
