I havent started yet and appoligies if this is in the wrong place but it will be a project soon and I will be needing advice.

Basically I have been offered a 1991 gs500e slingshot for 150 quid.

It needs a new tank, carb cover, battery, front brake lever and grabrail.

I will make it my first project as it is currently in a not too cosmetically good condition so I will strip it down to the frame, repaint it, clean it all up, get the necessary parts fitted and restrict it to 33bhp for the summer. as soon as I pass my test I can go for a ride on what will hopefully go for a ride on a almost mint condition, gs500e in black metalflake paintwork. Cool

So if anyone knows were i can get The above parts on the cheap then please tell me. I will get pictures as soon as she is mine and in my back garden.

Cheers
John

Unreservedly, eBay.

Also, breakers if you have any local.
Front brake lever you can probably get from Heine Gericke for IIRC £6.

Grab rail I don't think is necessary, carb cover might be hardish to get your hands on, tanks should appear on eBay.

Absolute piece of piss to get those parts...

You do not need a grab rail, I am running mine without one but I've got a renntec rack which I've just taken off because I don't like it!

Spares direct.

There should be a square of plastic that joins them up above the brakelight, and the plastics should be screwed into the bar that you see when you take the seat off.

The grab rail does not stablise the plastics.

Real bike meaning an IL4. Until you've had an IL4 with a race can redlining you don't know how good a bike can sound.

(I realise there will be twin fanboys out there, personally I prefer an IL4).

Laughing Awwww bless!

Try a 500cc single running purely on Methanol and Castrol R, idoling and then redlining... then try telling me your IL4 even comes close.

So in two sentences you've managed to reduce your argument to "Well I prefer inline fours so ner"

how did I know there would be an IL4 vs twin debate lol.

Parents get payed at the end of the month so I will have her in my back garden in 2-3 weeks.

If there are any more suppliers online then URLs would be helpfull so i can find out how much it will cost to get road legal.

Cheers

First thing I'd do (Only jst got round to doing it)

Buy yerself a big bollocking tin of degreaser and whack it on the bottom part of the shock past the dog bones where the slots are.

Read the numbers below the slot facing you. If it isn't '7' take the C-Spanner out of the toolkit (Under the seat behind rear brake light) and the breaker bar, hook it onto the slots on the shock (With the open part of the hook facing the front of the bike, you are standing on the left hand side of it, more accurately, lying Wink ) and then crank it clockwise until the notch facing you says '7'

Good improvement in ride quality.

Cheers for that, ill do it as soon as I get it.

Im going to homebase to get 2 litres of white spirit or something like that on my way home to degrease the whole thing.

Cheers

Don't forget to regrease the suspension linkages, else your ride quality will take a serious nose dive very quickly! Smile

Here's a good answer:

Grease?

I usually use stuff called aqua lube that is for boat trailer wheel bearings. Its waterproof and used for wheel bearings so its good stuff. However I've only ever seen it in my dad's garage, so I have no idea if its still available! Smile

Looks like water resistant white grease is available lots of places. I also copper grease for high temp stuff and fasteners likely to seize, and Moly grease for high pressure bearings.

That'll be fine, I'd probably use moly grease in that situation.

I seem to use copper slip everywhere aswell.
