Routine 600 mile service ? Bike is now off the road!

So i took my brand new bike in for it's first service on saturday. Get it back home and realize the oil is leaking out of the bottom of the bike from the sump plug i think.

Call the garage who come out to get it, and apparently the sump is cracked!? Not sure how this could have happened?

They say it will be fully repaired with a new sump under warranty but i'm now without a bike for a while.

Anybody ever have this happen before ?

Did the dealer not offer you a 'loaner' to ride around on while it gets fixed?

A cracked sump after your service could point straight in the direction of dodgy workmanship, maybe overtightened your sump plug?

I know a dealership in Plymouth that tends to muck up the 600 mile oil change.

Didn't offer me a loaner but i'm gonna ring tomorrow and see how long it's going to take as i'm the using the bike to get to work.

Said they would be ordering a new sump from Suzuki and fitting it as soon as it comes. To be fair they've been pretty good so far, the mechanic was straight in the car as soon as i phoned and was really apologetic, hopefully it'll be sorted soon.

Cross threaded the drain plug and hoped it would hold long enough so they could say 'It wasn't us'

Spoke to them today and they said there is a pretty good crack on the sump, they will save the part for me to look at. They're expecting a new sump from Suzuki tomorrow so hopefully will be sorted soon.

They have been ok about it so far and have accepted full responsibility for the damage.

A guy at work said he would get them to put in writing that they accept responsibility for any further damage that may have been caused by the sump getting damaged? Not sure what else could've been damaged i only rode about 10 miles after the service.

Amount of damage would depend on how much oil had leaked out. If it was pretty much all of it then a newish engine running dry would not be a good idea... Or any other come to that.

Sounds a lot like they knew that you would have a problem, as even the best garages try to worm out of stuff like this. They could say anything, such as you must have been hit by a stone or such.

Hat's off to them for getting it sorted quick, just a worry it happened in the 1st place.

Well oil level was still within the min/max levels when i got the bike back, it wasn't running dry so i'm fairly optimistic about no further damage.

Yeah i'm concerned it happened but they have been good about it so far, Mechanic was pretty much in a car and on his way as i spoke with them.

What's the chances it could've been a manufacturing fault with the sump?

They owe you a bike to use in the mean time. If not, claim expenses for all the alternative transport arrangements you have to make.
