Have a look at https://www.ns400r.sportbikeworld.com

Apparantly they make 72hp, but weigh around 190kg (I think)... you'd be much better off with a RS250. They only make a bit more power than a 400 4 stroke due to their age.
(sorry, but) I would expect the reliabilty would be terrible, you're looking at getting on for a 20 year old 2 stroke (only a few years off) in a high state of tune for the engine design. You might be able to get classics insurance, but I'm not sure if there's an age limit on that.

In general avoid unless you really know what you're doing.

yeah i see what your saying about the rs but picking up a 250 rs for under 1000 is going to be hard and thats all i can shell out at the mo and the bike being 20 years old it said in the paper it was a 1991 model and def a nsr and cos its ony 895 and still runing its could be worth my time buying it but if the pistons and rings need to be done btw how meny cylinders has 2 stroke 400 got is it 3 ? cos if it is 3 then say its 200 for a single piston and ring like on the nsr 125 then maybe its not such a good deal cos it would cost me 600 just to change pistons and rings and i guess cos its a two stroke they need to be changed as much as a 125.

According to the web site up ^ there it ahs threee carbs so probabl has three cylinders. I didn't realise you could still ge them in 91, but it is an old design and 190kg is a fair bit, were talking around 20kg less than a zx12R!

RGV250s can be picked up quite cheaply but it'd probably be better looking at something like a bandit 400 or cb400... both will be 'nicer' to rider 90% of the time and a lot less likley to blow up.

not such a special bike iwas expecting a lot more power to weight cos of it being a two stroke i guess u where right about the bike showing its age as for the top speed it aint that much more than the 125 nsr cos i got 200km/h on the clock it dont do that but aint far of. thx

it would be a massive risk id say, you are looking at rebuild for sure and if its 3 cylinder thats gonna be expensive
there is an nsr250 for sale in biketrader this month for 1500 i think, and an rgv can be got for about the same price
they will be newer, better looking and pretty much as fast

Hi

The NS400 was a great bike, and quite reliable (unlike the Honda MVX250 which was a totally unreliable dog, despite sharing a very similar engine configuration). It was one of the best handling bikes of its day. OK, the figures people have quoted for wieght are a bit high, but not sure how comparable that is. The manufacturers have got a bit more concerned with weight and a bit more skilled at producing a "dry" weight.

Oh, yes it is a 3 cylinder engine. It is a V3, but I cannot remember whther it is one cylinder to the front and 2 to the back, or the other way round. Running costs would not be cheap, and finding one which hasnt been tuned to death for reasonable money could be difficult

All the best

Keith
