my 2001 rs125 has 8700km on it and in the last 2 days has begun to sound funny
it sounds deep, as opposed to the usual whine, and it is havin trouble pickin up in the powerband
the throttle response is all different as well, it just feels and sounds wrong
any ideas?? i am about to replace the rings, is it more serious
thanx in advance

Sounds like your carb could do with a clean out. The deep sound is probably caused by the air/fuel mixture being too lean and the bike gasping at low(ish) revs.
Its like having a bike thats running perfect and opening the throttle full when only at low revs. Try it out and listen to the induction noise.

Try cleaning out your carb. Exhaust cokeing up wont cause it.

batman i dont no much about rs's but i got my nsr survice after 600 miles and then every 2000miles since then.

your rings should last atleast 15thousand miles but if your bikes done 8thousand + miles on the same transmition oil then your rings are probably gone and it wouldnt surprise me at all i you found that your gearbox was shaged due to exsess wear cause by very very very thick and dirty oil.

bottom line regular survicing may seem expensive but its alot cheaper then what its gunna cost you to change your rings (if ther have gone)

i never claimed to know anythin
i am not a mechanic, but that doesnt mean i dont know what speed shit goes etc
u dont need to be able to rebuild a bike to know about how quick they are
the bike has got as good as a service, i refused to pay some shit 200 quid to top up gear oil and replace a spark plug, i did this myself
the problem is almost certainly the rings, as its recommended u change them at 8000k on rs
i was just wondering had any1 any productive ideas to add, rather than the above nonsense

You should go find an RS125 forum if there's one about. I doubt this very much as nobody has the time cos they're trying to get their bikes workin again.

Keith is ok to have an RS125 because:-

a) WHEN it breaks down he can fix it AND
b) WHEN it breaks down he has other bikes to ride

Hey Batman...if you actually _read_ the first few posts, Craig and James do offer some possible solutions...I can't say how useful they are, but they did try to help!

...you're bound to get some digs around here, but they're generally about the bikes themselves, and not the rider, so please don't take things too personally (easier said than done, I know...)... Cool

Take it easy mate...and you really should get the bike regularly serviced...you run the risk of getting your warranty void (if you give a $hit, that is...)

i know yeah
all helpful stuff appreciated fully
i dont think it needs a piston replacement like the shop said, and am stuck between gettin both piston and rings for 250 or rings for maybe 150 in a garage
maybe might as well get whole thing done, but runnin around like a granny until the new shit wears in is gonna be gay!

ummm you didnt ask for our opinions???? wasnt the topic called "keith (or any 1) engine question"????????????? now the bit where you wrote "or any1" would seem to show you asking for our opinions as well as keiths???

any ways enough said

i dont think thats very fair as there are people in here with scooters, vfr's, rvf's, sv650's, yammy r6's etc etc so if batman has to leave cos hes got an rs then korn, zimma, mole, rob, scoobysnakes (to name a few) must have to leave as well.
any wayzs i hope you get your engine sorted batman but £200 for a survice????? my bike gets "a full oil change, new brake pads, stroker oil top up, gasket and bearings check" for £90 so i dont no whos survicing yours but they must off seen you commin.

Allthough MC City charged about £115 for my 12000mile service, most places are looking for £200-300 and the 16000mile can be upto £400  .... ZX's do seem to be pretty bad for the cost of serviceing in general.

yes but i was asking for help, not grief which is the main part of what was posted!
200 euro is about 110 of yours, a mate of mine got charged 180 for nothing really, so 250 for the rebuild isnt all too bad. bike shops over here are in general complete pricks, coz bikers are few and far between, especially those with 2 strokes, which are very rare
most tend to have a 'fuck off its not a big bike' attitude, and only srvice bikes that were purchased in their garage
