how cheap is cheap? , I've seen ZX4Rs for £500 around Mancs ,
I've seen engines with low miles from crashed bikes for £210. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

Head gaskets and cam chains are the preferred fodder for ZXR400s. Expect the cam chains and head gaskets to be eaten every 10 miles or so

Cam chains are fine, its the tensioners that go around the 20k mark
Head gaskets depend on a lot of things, but its adviseable to get it changed around 16k, as preventative maintainence.
Just need to try and find one that runs smoothly, there's always plenty of spare motors around though. ____________________ TL1000s, KDX200 |

ZXR400s are great bikes, price depends on which version, the ealrier H version is slightly faster but less desiarble than the latter L version.
As said, watch for cam chain rattles (normally the CCT's giving up the ghost), Pitting on the forks as theyre not that great in british weather.
Remmber the ride will be HARD, they make great track bikes but if your roads are bumpy dont expect a smooth ride (also dont let this put you off, they are fun!)
If its an H model with damaged fairings be careful as genuine fairings are a right mission to get hold of and the pattern jobs arnt so good!
Also check the chain and sprockets, mine always wore really quickly.
Another common problem is the rectifiers seem to go, oftern taking the alternator with them, both are easy and cheap to replace however!
goto www.zxrworld.com and read up there, helpful chaps and tons of info!
think thats about all i can remmber now, im 5 stellas down! ____________________ Squiffy_The_Wombat

Rocker switches and cams, listen for a kind of ticking noise when running the engine.
Only use full race oil, using anything else will cause the above problems ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

He said he wanted 500 for it, but would take a sensible offer. I haven't even seen it yet, hopefully I get a look at it on sunday subject to the weather.
So, generally, if the motor is smooth and quiet enough, and the electrics work then it might be worth a punt? I was most worried about the cost of things like head bearings and brake disks, I would suppose its the perfect wheelie/stoppie bike for a first timer with little mechanical sympathy.
I'll post some pics on monday if I get to see it.
Thanks all. ____________________ "THOSE WHO RISK NOTHING, DO NOTHING, ACHIEVE NOTHING, BECOME NOTHING." |

there is a fairing damaged NC30 in Cheadle if you are interested:
Damage:
Needs:
left side belly pan , left side middle panel ,nose cone & v piece
front wheel , LH clip on , LH switch gear , LH footpegs
left fork ,
all about £600 parts if bought new , £300 if bought 2nd hand, he wants £500 for the bike I have his number if you are interested , interestingly
enough breaking it for parts the bike bits are worth about £675-£750, I refuse to break repairable bikes however thus I didn't buy it , breaking
bikes that are servicable is bad , expecially bikes that are no longer produced. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Only prob I had with mine in the 2 yrs i had it was the aforementioned camshaft & rockers, but brakes discs& all were fine. However even after dropping teeth off the sprocket that bike is near impossible to wheelie, so doubt if there will be associated damage ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!!
