Buying a bike to replace my car. My daughter is 10 years old and is 1.40 meters tall. What is the legallities for her to ride pillion, and before anyone says it, yes she will be wearing a suitable size helmet and gloves.

As long as she can reach the pillion foot pegs without stretching, i don't think there are any other requirements.

Is that a legal requirement or just a safety tip?

Yeah, wasn't disputing that. Makes a lot of sense really. I definitely wouldn't let a drunk person on the back of my bike with me Shocked .

As far as I am aware not only can the drunk pillion be charged with a drink driving offence but so can the rider - even if the rider is sober at the time.

Children pillions... I knew there was a good reason for the placement of footpegs on sportsbikes! Smile

Yes it is, and before you ask it is also illegal to be drunk in charge of a skateboard.

Many years ago the Police were nicking people who were walking to their cars drunk with their keys in their hands because the intent was there to drive. People were successfully prosectued over it too.

Yes, bicycle too.

It's also illegal to be drunk in charge of a cow (seriously).

Back to the child pillion, All they need is to be able to reach the pegs correctly, face the front and wear a helmet. I would advise getting them fully kitted out though ( J&S do a very good line in kids clothing ) I would also say get some love handles ( a belt that the rider wears with handles on the side so that pillions can keep hold. Also if you have a top box put that on when the kids are starting to go on the back just for that little bit of extra support. Well thats what I have done and my son is happy ( also I have an intercom that he is wired up to so that we can talk while we ride just so as to make sure he is aware when I'm going to accelerate, brake or if he needs me to stop, etc )

Please, please make sure you get the proper gear nothing is more horrifying than seeing the rider in full leathers and the little kid on the back with nothing more than a lid Neutral

Think of the children

...sorry but someone had to say it Embarassed

FWIW seen many kids arrive at Squires with bike jacket, gloves and helmet, which is ok, but also wearing jeans and trainers Shocked

Actually, as I understand it, there isn't any rules about facing the front. That's why camera crews can with film marathons, cycle races, etc. from bikes with the pillion cameraman facing backwards.

If you're interested it's ok to be drunk on a horse (how do you think the hunts get away with so many stirrup cups of punch?).

Thumbs Up

not that a pillion would want to do it, but im sure i read somewhere that you dont actually have to be facing the front? dont quote me on it but im sure wherever it was that it said they just need to be touching the pegs? they sometimes do it on stunting vids but then again, stunting isnt very legal on public roads is it.. Confused

edit: just noticed i should have posted this earlier rather than leaving it in the background!

anyway as far as bicycles...my dad popped down the shop on mums trike pissed up, filling the back with beer and had the plod warn him about doing slalom in the road on his way back Laughing tut tut haha. luckily he knew him
