I went out for a blast yesterday despite the windy weather. Really enjoyed it but I have a quick question.

While going round a sharp slip road to join the motorway half way round the bend I noticed in the floor about a 12inch wide metal join that joined the motorway bridge to the slip road, it went across the entire road. Now i was going 60mph and as soon as I saw this metal I wasn't sure how I should go over it so to speak. It was not raining and the road was dry but I was scared that the back end might have slipped on the metal join so I let off the revs prompting the bike to lurch slightly forward I also started to look at the white line just after it.

As we all know what you look at is where you go so off I went towards the white line. Once i realised what I had done I looked further down the slip road to where i needed to be and bobs your uncle I was back on track but it shit me up slightly.

What should i have done when I saw the metal strip? Just carry on as normal? I have seen these metal joins before but only when I was in my car and at speed esp in the rain they have made my car slide slightly so god knows what they would do if it were raining!

Cath

a thin metal strip is no problem , since its limited , if it was a long bit of metal then its a problem since your rear may slip but instantly regaing grip about 1ft (.001 seconds later) on the road after wards,

its why I'm not so bothered about man hole covers on the A38 / A58 , they are limits you will slip but regain grip very quickly , and thus there is no problem ,

huge oil slicks that last for ages are a problem since there is no bit clean bit of road to regain grip,

Letting off the throttle will throw the weight distribution forward, as you saw.
In such cases it's generally best to keep the throttle slightly open to get that 60/40 'ideal' weight distribution. (60% to the wider rear tyre).
Extra weight on the front could possibly overload the front tyre as you go accross the strip.

I know the type of metal strip you're talking about. I think they are some kind of expansion joint usually found on flyovers/bridges and usually at the apex of the bridge.
I've found generally the best thing to do when you find something scary in the road is to carry on as normal, clench the arse cheeks, grit your teeth and hang on!

Yes, pay attention children, this step is very important. It will serve you well in life. You can even practice at home while watching dancing on ice -- left AND right AND both AND left.......

+1 Thumbs Up

If you're already too close for any safe avoidance, preferably try not to put any sudden inputs thru the bars or throttle. Try to be as smooth as possible, and 99% of the time the only damage you'll suffer is a nasty pinch mark on the seat Wink

well you could always wheelie over it to get your front wheel across then rolling stoppie to get the rear wheel across, this may be a tad extreme though

Theres a join just as you come up the flyover, heading south through the blackwall tunnel.
I love it, every morning I hit it at full speed if possible, and the bikes comes up in the air, both wheels for a second or two Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Your self criticism of 'This may be a tad extreme' makes me think you're being serious?

I hope you're not. If you are then you're stupid...
