I have always wondered, I don't smoke myself but loads of people do, and I personally don't see a point/reason to it and wondered what some reasons were. Is it stress? looking cool etc.. is it really worth the money people fork out or is it that easy to get hooked? I don't want to try it cos I don't to fork out so much hard earned dosh on something millions of people can't stop doing.

I was really stressed about 10 months back, and my friend kept giving me cigarettes (I've never smoked) and after a total of about 8/9 I started feeling mildly like I needed to have one....I stopped it there and then!

It might sound stupid, but I still feel it has made my breathing sound a little raspier!

Smoked about 30 a day for 15 years. Started by having the odd one when I was p1ssed but soon became addicted. Getting patches this afternoon. I love smoking but it's f*ckin' with my health now.

Cos all the cool kids do it!

Started as a social smooker then stress at uni in my final year pushed me onto them more, I've now backed off a bit, don't smoke while I'm at work, and trying to cut down more. I'll be quitting completely when the ban comes into play

I'm a bizarre one. I did the teenage smoking peer thing, packed it in when I was 17.

Then a year or so ago I started (aged 26! Rolling Eyes Confused )

I think it was the stress of my major domestic change at that time, coupled with going out drinking more often - drunkenly accepting odd cigarettes that are offered, quickly turns into 'shit, I'm a smoker!'

Keep trying to give up, I have MANY reasons to stop but the dreaded stuff is winning still.

The sad fact is, even though it stinks, costs lots, makes me cough, and means going out into the cold for a fix, having a cig and a brew does feel like a little 'treat', and a proper break from the hustle-bustle. I am trying to break that link, I know I won't give up till I do.

20 a day Embarassed

It makes you feel calmer and less stressed out, a fantastic feeling that everone strives towards, one which most people have as a natural state, but a feeling that fags take away from you and the only remedy is the short feeling of elation the next fag gives you.

Basicly the fag gives you back the feeling (temporarily) that it took away from you originally Evil or Very Mad

smoked at least 20 ciggys a day from 15 untill I was 38 (I'm 43 now)
stopped smoking ciggys as such but still use them to make joints
it may sound strange but I can't smoke a ciggy these days unless it has hash or weed in it

I'm loving the amount of people that are saying this right now, fact is, no you won't, you blatantly don't have enough motivation to do it off your own back so you won't cope just because you can't smoke in public.

I quit about 2 months ago, cold turkey, first 3 days were hell but after that it's pretty much easy going (don't drag your bodies addiction to nicotine out longer flip!) you just have to break your smoking routine after that.

I started smoking in school, not quite sure why but it seemed like a good idea at the time, 5/6 years later I finally quit after spending what I suspect to be a silly amount of money on cigarettes.

Tomorrow I'm quitting the cocaine! Very Happy

I took up biking, instead. Spending similar to smoking 200 fags a day everyday for the whole year, this year. (And that's at UK prices)*.

Also, it's seen me injured in a variety of ways and I just can't seem to give up.

Many others wonder why I do it as there's little 'point' to it Smile.

I tried my first cigarette when I had just turned 12, thought it was disgusting, but to get into the cool crew I basically had to try out smoking. I think at the age of about 14 it was generally conceived to be "cool". I only smoked on and off though.

Smoking became much more of a problem once I was 16 and legal to buy cigarettes, the temptation was there and i'd quite often find myself buying a pack of 10 "cause I could". Then I didn't smoke again for quite a while. However when I turned 17 I started going out with my now fiancée and she smoked a lot at the time and the old temptation to smoke again came back. Remember being sat out in the garden til 3 in the morning just puffing away on a cigarette. I then smoked about 15-20 a day for a year when I decided I wanted to quit smoking. We both wanted too and so on June 27th 2006, we both quit. Haven't smoked since. We realised we never got anything out of smoking apart from a bad cough and smell.

I think it's only when you quit smoking you actually realise how selfish it is. Not just because of the smell you create, but also the smoking related deaths that happen all too often, it puts unwanted pain onto a third party later in life.

I still get temptations to smoke, but you get through them. That's what the real willpower is about. Anybody can quit, but not so many people can stay off.

You're making it harder though, go cold turkey and nicotine is out of your body in 3 days, the first 3 days will be bloody hard but after that it's just a case of telling your self to no when your head suggests a fag at your usual times, you know I'm right. Wink

I couldn't understand smoking when I was younger at all and hated it.
Same as a lot of people here I started with the odd one when drinking or having a joint when younger, then onto uni and more going out drinking until eventually I was a full time smoker.

I smoked from between 18-25 quite heavily and used to smoke a lot of weed as well.
I stopped the ciggies completely over 2 years ago and it was intensely hard. If you're going to do it cold turkey it is perfectly simple but just very hard work.
I still smoke a bit of weed on weekends but not with tobacco at all.
That actually made it harder to be honest to start with it was very strange!
I had made the mistake before of stopping for 6months then going back to smoking joints or just when drinking but the second time round I realised it had to be absolute.
It is scary how addictive you realise it is when you stop and I am very, very glad I did.

I used to smoke. Was at it for 15 years. I quit about 5 years ago cold turkey.

Why did I smoke? Well, ask yourself why you drink coffee or tea (if you do). Similar thing. Habit, then an urge to top up when your levels get low. With smoking you get agitated and stressy, so smoke to come down again. The weird thing is that smoking doesn't calm you, it actually increases the heart rate, but you FEEL calmer with it.

Giving up cold turkey: plan it. If you're going away, start quitting before you go. I went to Copenhagen with work, and used that as a time to quit. Make sure you have fresh clean clothes with no smell on them, otherwise you get the urge to start again.

I started trying them when i was at school, as you do. I actually didnt like it then, and i didnt take it up.
As the year went buy (think i was 14), i was doing more and more with peers, and then i just started buying them and smoking them on my paper round.
Then one day i got caught, and the disappointment my parents felt, was enough to MAKE me quit.
Then when i turned 16, i started social smoking, and became hooked. For a good few months i smoked, until i went on hols where it was virtually impossible for me to smoke without being found out. Those two weeks were hell, and i thought id managed to quit.
Back to the UK, and within the first week i bought 10 malboro lights, smoked one, and it tasted absolutely shit.
It was so shit, i threw the packet away there and then.
Ever since then its been on/off drunken smoking, which i dont actually like doing but when im drunk, it doesnt seem to matter.
When i am sober thought i very rarely get the urge to want to smoke, although it is still there, sort of lurking.
Dont smoke, its just stupid.

I gave up smoking about a month ago and the same times started going to the gym regularly. I thought what's the point in going to the gym while still smoking?

I still smoke on Sundays when I'm out on the bike and stop for a break but that's it. I don't smoke at work or in the pub and TBH it's been a piece of piss to give up. I smoked for 10 years and the reason I've found it easy to give up this time apart from Sundays Wink ) is that I've wanted to. So now my weekly cigarette total is about five.
