Right, I've got about £100-£120 to spend on a new pedal bike. I want it delivered to my house, want front suspension and V-brakes at a minimum, and it needs to be a 20" frame because I'm a giant!! I prefer the mens frames, as they feel sturdier for some reason!

Anyone got any suggestions on bikes and where I can get it from (websites)

Ta,

Weedy Cool

You are going to get a very 'compromised' bike for that kind of money.
Whether the front suspension will help or hinder is a question.
When dusty was getting a push bike, the difference between the suspension on a reduced price 2005 model (£400 from £600) and full price 2006 model (£500) was quite impressive - noticeably better by just bumping it up and down.
The cheap front suspension bikes I've ridden, it hasn't really done much.

Argos and ebay are obvious places that do delivery.
You could try www.wiggle.co.uk, but I doubt they'd have anything that good.

Had you considered seeing if there's anything second hand local to you (maybe they could deliver for you).

Thanks G. I'm not really doing much with it, probably a couple of road rides a week (probably about 10 miles per ride) so it won't be hassled much!!

I've checked Argos, pretty pants selection, but there's one on the Halfords that's not too bad for the money Confused

The closest town is about 8 miles away, so I'll have to look when I'm next there! Laughing

If it's only road riding, I'd definitely go for no suspension.
I went for one with a 'lock out' fork (through a work scheme, so I could go for a proper-fancy one Smile ) and ride with the fork locked out on the road all the time.
Dusty's has a similar lock out fork and he usually forgets to unlock it off road. Definitely over half the time I have it locked out - off road you still want it locked out going up hill etc.

The thing with getting them delivered to your door is that you have to assemble them yourself.

Not too easy when they're budget parts that don't really go together.

If you buy from a shop you'll get the first (much needed) service included.

£150-200 in a shop will get you a discounted 2005/2006 bike and a serviced / assembled.

Hmmm, I am thinking about leaving it a month now and putting some more money into it.

Might make more sense to do that Thumbs Up

20" is a hefty size. 18-19" is enough for most people, esp with a decent seat post.

Whatever you do, don't buy a second hand one off ebay. It's horrendously overpriced as people don't know what they're buying.

My last bike I was measured up for, and was told 20" was the right size for me Confused

I don't think I'll buy off Ebay, don't worry Laughing

yeah i agree with g here, riding with suspension on the roads is just a pain up the arse. it make 3 times harder to do anything, it takes all the energy out of the pedaling. because every time you push down on the pedals the front forks compress and it really takes it out of you.

and another thing is the frame size, how tall are you Question . if you go for the 20" frame it makes it harder work for you aswell than it would if you say went for a 18" or a 19" and just had you seat up a bit more.

and another mistake people allways make is going for the big off road tyres, unless you are going too go through muddy off road trails you just simply dont need them, try to get something with a cross country tyre on it, it will make it alot easier on you when you are out on the road and they tend to last longer on the road aswell.

im guessing that you are just looking to do a bit of exercise, cycling is a good way to go for that.

Thumbs Up

Hey colezxr, I'm about 1cm off 6ft Thumbs Up Laughing

I'm just looking to excercise and enjoy the sunny Norfolk countryside this summer. Not looking to do much off road, but it may be called for every now and again (gravel paths, a bit of farm land etc)

I'm a little bit shorter than you, though not much and a 18.5" frame works for me on the road with the seat up moderately high.

Off road, I'd prefer a bit smaller frame so I could move around more.

I used to have a 20" bike, but think one a bit smaller works better for me as I have the flexibility to move around a bit more, but can still have the seat as high as I want it.

I'm in a similar situation, looked at a few ebay bikes, people who know something about bikes tell me what's wrong with this one? Smile

Ta,

Weedy Cool

I got a new 20" 2006 Saracen Ruftrax 3 for £180 from onyourbike.co.uk.
It can be done.
